CHAPTER THREE

Penny looks like she's just about asleep, but she sits up wide-eyed when the bus door flies open and the sound of a screaming baby fills the air. Immediately following are the sounds of hurried foot-steps. Then a teen girl with long, flowing blond hair appears at the door with the crying child in her arms.

"You need to take him, Taylor," Jessie says. "He will not stop screaming. I've tried everything short of a tranquilizer!"

Taylor takes his son into his arms, cradling him close.

"Okay, okay. It's alright," he murmurs as Jessie flops down across from us. Taylor tries to quiet his third born, rocking him and whispering to him. His cries are piercing.

"Tay, let me try," I speak up. The singer looks at me and nods. Then we carefully exchange children. I cuddle River close and rock him gently.

My mind is unusually blank as I try to think of a song. I close my eyes and take a slow deep breath. Then the words just come to me.

"Don't know where you are. Wish I just could be near you. I would sail oceans, to get a glimpse of how you feel. You're all the things I'm looking for. Everything and so much more."

It feels like everyone's staring at me. I open my eyes a crack to take a peek. Sure enough, all eyes are on me. Even Penny's. I smile at her and continue singing.

"What I think, you are just perfect. Could it be, that I am worth it? Is this thing an open door? Walk right through to something more. You and me. My life would change in a second. In a second.

"Don't know how you feel. Seem to keep it to yourself. Would you climb mountains to show me this is something real? You're all the things I'm looking for. Everything and so much more."

River has calmed down. His screaming wails have been reduced to nothing more than little sniffles and hiccups. I look over to Taylor and he mouths, Keep going, to me. So I keep singing.

"What I think, you are just perfect. Could it be, that I am worth it? Is this thing an open door? Walk right through to something more. You and me. My life would change in a second. In a second.

"Could it be, could it be? You and me, you and me. Do I see, do I see, clearly? What I think, you are just perfect. Could it be, that I am worth it? Is this thing an open door? Walk right through to something more. You and me. My life would change in a second. In a second."

I have now successfully quieted River and lulled him to sleep. It seems as if we all breathe a collective sigh of relief. But not a moment too soon as we hear the door at the front of the bus open and Isaac shout.

"Guys?!" Jessie's on her feet and hurrying to the opposite end of the bus in a matter of seconds. I check River to make sure he's still asleep. Thankfully he is.

Jessie comes back a moment later carrying a little boy on her hip.

"Where's Ike?" Taylor asks quietly as Ezra climbs up on the couch next to him. He gives his oldest child a hug and kiss, smiling.

"Oh, he just dropped Ez off," Jessie explains. "He's out signing autographs. And he said you should get out there too." Taylor nods.

"Yeah. Okay." Then he gives his sister a look. She stands saying,

"Hey, Ez, lets go get a snack." Ezra's eyes light up and he crawls off the couch.

"Okay!"

"Penny, you wanna come too?" Jessie asks her niece. The toddler looks at her father, then at me. I smile at her.

"Go ahead, Baby," I tell her. "I'll still be here." After a silent moment, Penny lets Jessie help her off the couch and lead her away.

Excluding River, Taylor and I are alone now and silent. I shift uncomfortably in my seat.

"You know, I'd love to stay and hold him all night, but I should probably get going. It's late," I announce. Taylor looks a bit panicked.

"No! Stay!" he exclaims. I look at him with raised eyebrows. "I just, I mean..." The singer takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly.

"Tay?" I ask. He chews on his bottom lip nervously.

"Willyoucomeontourwithus?"

I stare blankly at the blond sitting next to me.

"Huh?" Taylor takes another deep breath.

"Will you come on tour with us and be the kids' nanny?" he asks, speaking slowly this time.

"Oh, Taylor, no. I couldn't do that," I say.

"Please?" Taylor pleads. "Jessie's going back to Tulsa tomorrow and if you don't stay she'll have to take the kids with her. Besides, Penny adores you and look at how you handled River." I study the singer's baby blues. I really don't want to say no to him.

"I don't know..." I'm feeling a little uneasy.

"Of course I'll pay you," Taylor says. "A hundred bucks a day."

My jaw drops and I stare at him wide-eyed.

"That's seven hundred bucks a week!"

"Is that not enough?" Taylor asks. "'Cause I can raise it."

"No, no! Tay, that's more than enough!" I tell him. "God, I'd do it for free. These kids are amazing. But...I just can't pick up and leave."

"Please, Liza," Taylor begs. "There's only four more months left." I chew on my lip for a moment.

"I have plans tomorrow night," I state.

"You can't cancel?" Taylor asks. I shake my head.

"It's a birthday party...it's my birthday party," I tell him. Taylor grins.

"Tomorrow's your birthday?" I nod. "How old?"

"Twenty-two," I answer.

"You're only twenty-two?" I give the blond a look.

"Yeah. You got a problem with that?"

"No. I just thought you were closer to my age is all," he tells me with a shrug. I nod.

We study each other for a moment before Taylor speaks up.

"So, will you take the job?" he asks. Then he gives me overly-exaggerated puppy-dog eyes. I shake my head, smiling.

"I don't have a choice, do I?" Taylor grins.

"Nope." His grin is contagious. "And you don't have to cancel your birthday," he informs me. "Our next show isn't till Friday and it's in Boston. So we can take the next few days to have your birthday party, get you packed and buy anything you'll need on tour." I nod.

"Sounds good." Taylor smiles softly.

"You'll really do it?" he asks. "You'll come on tour with us?" I nod again.

"Yes." He leaps forward and hugs me tightly.

"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"

"Shh! You're going to wake the baby!" I hiss. Taylor clamps his hand over his mouth. Then he removes it whispering sorry.

I check the baby in my arms.

"It's okay," I tell him. "He's fine." Then I look up at the piano player. He smiles at me.

"You know, I didn't ask you to come on tour with us just for the kids," he says. I raise an eyebrow at him.

"Oh really?" He grins.

At that moment, Ezra and Penny come running into the room with Jessica a few steps behind them. The kids climb up beside their father and myself with cookies in their hands, while Jessie sits across from us.

"Have a nice talk, you two?" she asks with a smirk. I blush, lowering my gaze, but Taylor speaks up.

"Liza's coming on tour," he announces. "She's going to be our new nanny." Jessie raises an eyebrow.

"Oh?" I blush harder.

"Yeah."

Zac enters the room now.

"Tay, you better get outside," he says. "Ike's getting mad that you're not tending to the fans." Taylor nods.

"Yeah, okay." Then he turns to me. "Do you mind staying with the kids?" he asks. I shake my head.

"Not at all. We'll be fine," I tell him. He smiles.

"I won't be gone long," he replies. Then he and Zac leave.
