They were laying on a blanket spread out on the grass in the backyard of Tommy’s house. A house that his job was renting to him that consisted of a bathroom, bedroom and a combination living room, dining room, kitchen. It also had a porch and a huge backyard. Athena thought it was a cozy little place and the lack of privacy didn’t bug her as much as it did in other places. She was just glad she was here, with him.
Now they were laughing over some childhood memory where Tommy had accidentally kicked Athena in the eye when they were playing Power Rangers. “We had so much fun together when we were little,” Athena stated. “What happened?”
Tommy shrugged. “Our middle school was bigger,” he said. “We made new friends. We were in different groups. But that doesn’t mean I stopped thinking about you, or wanting to be around you.”
“Same here,” Athena whispered. Then they laid in a comfortable silence, each thinking about the memories they had made together since they were two years old.
“How long?” Athena asked suddenly.
“How long what?” Tommy asked.
“How long have you been in love with me?” she asked quietly.
“Probably as long as you’ve been in love with me,” Tommy answered.
“Seventh grade?”
Tommy nodded. “Yeah. I don’t know what changed that year but… I just know something did.”
Athena nodded in agreement. She licked her lips and said, “Do you remember when you were always trying out those wrestling moves on me when our moms would go to the laundry mat in seventh grade?”
Tommy grinned to himself. “Yeah.”
“I lived for those times.”
Tommy’s eyes widened a bit and he looked over at Athena. “You did?”
Athena nodded. “It was the only time we would touch.”
Tommy’s mouth suddenly felt dry and he had to lick his lips. “I lived for those moments too,” he murmured.
“Really? Why?”
“Because it was the only time we would touch.”
Athena slapped Tommy in the side lightly. “Hey, make up your own reasons,” she said making her friend chuckle.
Tommy reached over and tangled their fingers together. “I’m serious,” he murmured. “I thought it was the only way I could get away with holding on to you. And it’s not like it’d be all that weird since we were always wrestling and stuff when we were younger, ya know?”
Athena nodded. “Yeah, I get it.” She paused a moment. “But I would have let you hold me even without the wrestling.”
“I didn’t know that then,” Tommy said quietly.
“Well, you know it now,” Athena replied. The pair was silent as Tommy turned on to his side and scooted closer to his friend. He brushed a stray lock of hair away from her eyes and touched her cheek gently with his fingertips. “How does it feel to touch now that you don’t have to hide the real reason?” Athena asked quietly.
Tommy smiled. “How does it feel to you?”
“Kinda perfect, to be honest.”
Tommy’s smile turned in to a grin. “Yeah, that sounds about right: perfect. It feels perfect.” Athena smiled up at Tommy and ran her fingers through his soft brown hair. She cupped the back of his neck and pulled him down for a sweet, closed-mouth kiss, her breath catching in her throat. It was the first time their lips had ever met.
Tommy pulled back slowly after a moment, smiling, and then laid his head on Athena’s chest, listening to her heart beat quicken. “Are you okay?” he asked quietly, his brows furrowing in concern.
Athena smiled, stroking Tommy’s hair. “Yeah, fine, just… My heart’s racing because of you.”
Tommy lifted his head. “Really?” Athena nodded. Then Tommy laid his head back down on her chest, listening as her heart slowly went back to a normal rhythm. When it had, he moved again, pressing the length of his body to her side, pressing his nose in to her neck. She smelled faintly like citrus, maybe lemon. Tommy inhaled deeply, trying to commit the scent to memory.
Athena sighed quietly. She wanted to remember this moment forever. The way the setting sun made the sky turn all sorts of beautiful colors from orange to pink to lavender. The way Tommy felt pressed in to her side, his warm breath ghosting over her skin. This moment was like Heaven. It was a moment she’d never forget.
