CHAPTER SIX

Tommy paced up and down the long corridor outside the surgical ward’s waiting room. The waiting room was just too small for the pacing he needed to do. Adam was in surgery right now and he didn’t know how long it would take. Adam’s family was coming, but it would be awhile as they lived on the other side of the country.

Tommy sighed and scrubbed his face with his hands, rubbing the tears away as he kept his pace steady while he walked. Here he was, waiting for news, any kind of news, while Adam was in an operating room fighting for his life. A life that Tommy Joe wanted to be a part of. A life that he wasn’t sure he could live without. He didn’t know what he’d do if Adam died because he’d been trying to protect Tommy from this evil Scar Face. He wasn’t sure how he was going to face Adam’s parents when they got here. He felt so guilty, although Rebecca had told him not to because Adam had just been doing his job. But that didn’t make Tommy feel any better.

After almost five hours, Adam was out of surgery and in recovery. The surgeon told Rebecca and Tommy Joe that Adam had lost a lot of blood. But he had been very lucky as the bullets had passed through his torso and missed all of his vital organs. Tommy began to cry in relief. “When can I see him?” he asked.

“Right now,” the doctor answered. “But there’s something you need to know.” Tommy looked expectantly at the surgeon. “Adam’s vitals are good,” he began, “but he still hasn’t woken up from the anesthesia.”

“What… what does that mean?” Tommy asked, his lower lip quivering.

“We won’t know until he wakes up... if he does wake up.”

Tommy grit his teeth and tried to hold himself together. “Take me to him,” he said in a low voice. The doctor nodded and escorted Tommy to the recovery room.

Tommy stepped quietly inside the little room Adam was laying in and slowly walked over to the bed. Adam was laying there, eyes closed, breathing on his own, looking peaceful. But it didn’t make it any easier on Tommy. He pulled the chair in the room right up to the side of the bed and took Adam’s hand in his own. “I’m so sorry,” Tommy Joe murmured. “I’m so sorry you’re hurt. That you had to have surgery and that you haven’t woken up yet. This is all my fault and I’m so sorry.” He curled in to a ball on the chair and held tightly to Adam’s hand as he wept. Adam may never wake up and it was all his fault. “I love you,” Tommy whispered and slowly drifted off to sleep as the tears rolled down his cheeks.

Adam sighed and blinked a few times against the glaring light of the sterile room. He was obviously in the hospital, but he couldn’t remember why. When he shifted on his bed though, a searing pain ran through his side and it came back to him. He’d been shot. Then he heard a little snore and looked next to him. There was Tommy Joe curled up in a hard hospital chair, holding on to Adam’s hand. Adam couldn’t help the small smile that lifted the corners of his lips. He really didn’t want to wake Tommy, but he needed to know if he was okay. So he squeezed the hand still clutching his and murmured Tommy’s name. “Tommy… Tommy Joe…”

Tommy’s eyes fluttered open. When he saw Adam was awake, his eyes went wide and he jumped up from his chair, launching himself at Adam. He caught himself just in time as he remembered that Adam had been shot before he actually landed on the dark-haired man. Instead of tackling him, Tommy just climbed up on to the bed with Adam and wrapped his arms around the wounded man's neck, crying quietly. “Tommy Joe, are you okay?” Adam asked worriedly as he wrapped an arm around Tommy’s slim waist.

Tommy pulled back just enough to look Adam in the eye. “Are you okay?” he replied.

Adam chuckled quietly. “I’m sore, but intact,” he answered. Tommy let out a sob of relief and buried his face back in Adam’s neck. “Are you okay, Tommy?” Adam asked again. “Scar Face didn’t hurt you, did he?”

Tommy snuggled in closer to Adam and shook his head. “Physically I’m fine,” he said. “But I was just so terrified. And then I found out you were shot and I just…” He let out a sob as a thought occurred to him. “Oh god. Am I gonna have to be relocated now that I was found?” he asked, drawing back to look at Adam.

Adam shook his head and stroked Tommy Joe’s two-toned hair. “No,” he murmured. “Scar Face is dead and you’re not in any danger now. You can remain in the program and keep this new identity.”

Tommy smiled gratefully and leaned forward to press his lips softly to Adam’s. “I’m so glad you’re okay,” he whispered.

When Adam’s parents, Eber and Leila, and his brother Neil arrived, Tommy felt a bit uncomfortable being in the bed with Adam, clinging to him. But when he tried to get up, Adam tightened his one-armed hold on him and Tommy stayed put. “Oh, baby,” Leila cooed when she saw Adam in the hospital bed. She quickly strode to his side and leaned over to kiss him lightly. “How are you feeling?” she asked.

Adam shrugged, and then winced. Apparently shrugging was another one of those things he wouldn’t be able to do until he was all healed. “I’m pretty sore,” he told his mother honestly. “But I’m okay. Apparently the bullets missed all the important stuff.”

“How did this happen?” Leila asked as she furrowed her brow.

Adam tensed and Tommy could feel it. He stroked the hand that was resting on his hip and hoped it would soothe Adam some. “Ma, you know I can’t tell you that. All I can say is that it was work related.”

Leila sighed and pulled a chair up next to Adam’s bed. “Sweetie…” She made a face like she was surprised she hadn't noticed the petite man in Adam’s arms earlier. “Who’s this?” she asked.

“Tommy Joe,” Adam answered softly and looked down at the warm being he held on to who was drifting in and out of consciousness.

“How’d you two meet?” Leila asked.

Adam sighed. “Work.” Leila raised an eyebrow. “Ma, I can’t talk to you about this. I’m sorry.”

Leila turned to her husband and younger son. “Eber, Neil, could you give us some time? Maybe go to the cafeteria?” she asked. The two men nodded and left the room.

As Leila turned back to her eldest child, a small snore came from Tommy. Adam smiled down at him and stroked his hair a little. “He’s had a rough day,” he said quietly.

“Is he okay?” Leila asked. “Did he get hurt?”

Adam shook his head. “No, he just…” He paused to sigh. “I can’t get in to it with you, Ma.”

“Adam,” Leila said in her mom voice. “What have you gotten yourself in to? I mean, this isn’t the first time we’ve rushed out here because you’ve been hurt from your so-called work. Why won’t you tell us anything?”

Adam worried his lower lip debating if he should keep firm or just give in. “Fine, I’ll tell you the very little that I can.” He took a deep breath. “I work for the feds,” he told her. “I’m a US Marshall.”

“What… what does that mean?” Leila asked softly.

“Mostly it means that I’m part of the Witness Protection Program,” Adam explained. “I protect people whose lives are in danger.”

“Oh, Adam, why didn’t you ever tell me this?” Leila asked. “That is such an important job. I’m so proud of you.”

“Ma, there’s just so much I can’t tell you that it was easier to just not say anything,” Adam said. “There are so many confidential things that if I leaked them to you, I could get my witnesses killed. I just… you see why I never said anything?”

Leila nodded in understanding. “Is Tommy Joe a Marshall?” Adam could only shake his head. “Were you protecting him? Is he one of your witnesses?”

Adam sighed. “I cannot confirm or deny that,” he said robotically.

“Oh, Adam.”

Adam’s eyes began to water. “It sucks, Ma,” he told her quietly.

“What does, baby?” Leila asked.

“Being in love with him."

Leila smiled. “You’re in love with him?” Adam gave her a small answering smile. But then she frowned. “But, honey, why does that suck?”

“Because it’s against all the rules for me to be in love with him."

“Oh, Adam,” Leila sighed. “Honey, you need to do what is right for you. Screw the rules! If you’re in love with him, can’t you just hand him over to another Marshall?”

“I’m not completely sure. All I really know is that I’ve never been more in love with anyone ever. The only one that even came close was Brad.”

Leila smiled. “You were head over heels for that boy.”

Adam nodded in agreement. “Yeah, but what I feel for Tommy totally eclipses what I felt for Brad. I just… I want to marry him, Ma.”

Leila’s eyes teared up. She could feel her son’s heartache. “Baby, if that’s how you feel, you need to figure it out. You need to find a way to be with him. Does he feel the same?”

“He’s never said he loves me and I mean, I’ve never said it to him but… we’ve both said we were falling for each other.” Adam looked down at Tommy, his face peaceful for the time being as he slept. “He doesn’t want a new Marshall because he doesn’t want me to leave him. But it's completely against the rules and I really like my job, ya know?” Leila nodded. “But… I can’t be without him.”

“Then figure it out, baby. Find a way that you can keep your job and be with him. But you have to realize that you may need to sacrifice your career to be with him, to be happy. Do what’s right for your soul, baby.”

Adam nodded. “Yeah, okay.” He closed his eyes. “I’m so tired,” he murmured.

“You just get some rest, honey, I’ll be here when you wake up,” Leila told him.

“Thanks, Ma. I love you.”

“I love you too, baby."
