CHAPTER SEVEN
When it's time, I lead the pack to the house next door where my party's being held. As we file through the door into the kitchen, I hear my neighbor Joyce speak.
"When you said a few extra people were coming, I didn't know you meant a whole basketball team!" I make a face at her.
"It's my birthday," I point out. Joyce laughs.
"I'm just kidding." I grin.
"I know."
I look around at the people in the room with me. Most all of the gang is here. But that's not surprising seeing as how everyone whose here, either lives in this house or the two neighboring ones.
"So I guess I should make some introductions," I say. Pointing everyone out, I begin. "So this is Ken and Joyce. And this is Joyce's daughter Lynn. And the three kids running around are hers. They are Erika, Russell and Carl."
Just then, the door behind us opens and two more people walk in.
"Hey everyone," the dark-haired guy in the baseball cap says.
"This is Kenny and his girlfriend Nicole," I continue. Then I turn back to the others and say, "And this is Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson. And these three wonderful children belong to Taylor. Ezra, Penny and the baby is River." I take a breath then. "Well, I think that covers it." There's a collective chuckle and everyone darts off in different directions.
After a while, a bunch of us end up in the dining room with the karaokee machine. Ken is trying his hardest to get me to sing with him. But I'm not giving in. For some reason, I'm just too shy to sing in front of Hanson. I mean, they're professionals. At that moment, Lynn comes in the room.
"Are you here to save me?" I ask her hopefully. She smiles brightly.
"Actually, I am," she says. "I've got a surprise for you over at my house." With that, we all get up and trudge next door.
Once in the house, Lynn directs me to the basement. As I head down the basement stairs, a loud crashing of cymbols are head. I race down the rest of the steps to find my one true love: .medicated.kisses. Alanna grins, speaking into the mic.
"Now we can really get this party started!" The band goes right into Little Miss Nashua, which is one of the only songs by them I don't know the words to. But it's a new one, so I'm sure I'll get it soon enough.
Everyone is crowded around in the basement excluding my mom and Joyce who are upstairs or next door with River. Most of the little kids are down here too with their hands over their ears. But I'm really not paying much attention as I'm mainly focused on the band performing in front of me.
When the song ends, I clap and cheer the loudest. Alanna comes over to me and gives me a hug and kiss.
"Happy birthday, hon," she tells me. I can only grin. Then Alanna starts walking back and forth in front of the crowd.
"We are so happy to be here celebrating with our favorite girl," she says. "We love you, Liza." Then .medicated.kisses. start playing Penny's favorite song.
I scoop the little girl into my arms, dancing with her. She claps along to the song and even tries to sing with the chorus. Taylor's grinning at us and I'm having so much fun.
When the song ends, they go right into another fast one. It's one of my favorites that I can recognize with one chord of the guitar; Fantastic Gentleman. I set Penny back on the floor, clapping my hands and stomping my feet. I turn to Taylor, singing along.
"It's not about revenge, it's just something that I do." The blond singer raises an eyebrow at me. I return the gesture.
After a few more songs, .medicated.kisses. decides to end the show.
"It's been fun, guys," Alanna says a bit breathlessly. "This is our final song and we'd love for Liza to join us." She holds out a mic. I take it hesitantly and everyone cheers. I'm a bit nervous. But Aaron, the bass player, comes over to me and whispers in my ear.
"Just breathe." I give him a nod and we start. Luckily Aaron's advice works and I'm able to jump right into the song.
"When it's cow-skin you wear, and you're slicking back your hair, well come stagger down the hall 'cause she's been waiting. With a piercing deadly stare, you pretend like I'm not there. Do you think that I should care 'cause I've been waiting, oh.
"We're coming home. We're coming home. The way that she moves when she moves alone, yeah. And we're marching home in perfect little rows. She walks a little different when she's alone, yeah.
"It's a twisted situation. Felt love through medication. While it's sweeping through the nation I can feel it. bang.bang. It's the way she moves around you. She was lost until I found her. All the cuts and bruises mark her. She can't take it, oh.
"We're coming home. We're coming home. The way that she moves when she moves alone, yeah. And we're marching home in perfect little rows. She walks a little different when she's alone, yeah.
"And we all know, and we all know that he can't stay, baby. So don't you ever say... Just don't day that we could be different. Just don't say that we could be different. 'Cause we both know that this could be the last chance that I get. 'Cause we both know that this will be the last chance that I get."
At this point in the song, I move over to Taylor, standing right in front of him. This is my favorite part of Saint. The lyrics are pretty meaningful, so I look Taylor directly in the eye.
"So any time you need me, I'll be right behind you. Call me if you're lost, 'cause I'll be there to find you. Any time you need me, just call me and I'll be there. Ooooh. Just don't say that we could be different, 'cause you know that we're the same!"
I wink at Taylor, then bounce away.
"We're coming home. We're coming home. The way that she moves when she moves alone, yeah. And we're marching home in perfect little rows. She moves a little different when she's moving alone.
"Don't say that we could be different. Don't say that we could be different. Just don't say that we could be different. Can't you see that we are just the same. bang.bang."
I'm grinning, out of breath, and everyone's cheering for me. This is the best birthday ever.

You know I love this story so much. I liked the birthday party and the surprise - it just seemed natural for them to gift her with music. And her fear of singing before Hanson because they're proffessionals... perfect!!!

Yes, an update! I'm so so so glad you're still reading this! But I laugh b/c all the important things I was supposed to put in this chapter aren't coming till number 8! (shhh don't tell)
Wouldn't you be scared of singing in front of professional singers? haha I totally would!
*hugs n love*
