CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The ride to 24-Hour Suds is comfortably quiet except for when I have to tell Taylor to take a left here or a right there. When we make it to our destination, Taylor parks and turns off the car, leaving the keys in the ignition. He leans back in his seat, not speaking.

"Tay?" I ask quietly. He turns to me, a slight frown on his face.

"Are you happy?"

I blink slowly, surprised at the question.

"What?"

"Are you happy?" Taylor asks again. "With this life? With touring and never being in the same place for more than a night or two?" I shake my head, confused by this entire conversation.

"What would make you ask all this?"

Taylor sighs, running a hand through his hair.

"It's just, with Natalie, neither of us knew the other was so unhappy until the relationship was too far gone to fix," he explains. "I don't want that to happen to us. You mean too much to me. And to the kids." He shrugs.

I reach over, cupping his face in my palm. I stroke his cheek lightly, smiling.

"Of course I'm happy, Tay," I tell him. "You would know if I wasn't."

"Would I?" the blond asks quietly.

"Oh, Tay," I murmur. It's obvious he needs reassurance.

I take off my seatbelt and turn completely around in my seat to face my boyfriend. I take one of his hands and clasp it between both of mine, letting them rest on the center console.

"Taylor, this is my dream job," I begin. "This is what I went to school for. Being a nanny is why I got certified in CPR and First Aid. Being with you and the kids and even your brothers, makes me insanely happy. I've never been this happy before."

A smile finally appears on Taylor's face.

"Taking care of such wonderful kids is what I've always wanted to do," I continue. "Getting to see America and falling in love with a rock-star is just icing on the cake." Taylor smirks at me.

"You fell in love with a rock-star?"

I feel a blush creep into my cheeks as I realize that I had indeed said that.

"Well, you know, Zac's just so irresistable," I say. Taylor's jaw drops. I can't help giggling at his shocked expression. "I'm kidding!" I exclaim. Taylor pouts.

"That wasn't very nice." But it doesn't last long as a smile breaks over his face and he says, "You love me?" He looks so hopeful.

I smile bashfully, suddenly feeling shy.

"Well, yeah, Tay. I mean, isn't it obvious?" Taylor reaches over, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear.

"It seemed obvious to me," he says. "But I didn't know if it was real or just my wishful thinking." I can't help smiling at his words.

"It's true, Tay," I tell him. "I do love you." The blue-eyed singer smiles at me lovingly.

"That's really good," he replies. "Because I'm pretty much head-over-heels in love with you." My heart swells and I feel as if I could cry at the sheer joy of it all.

I lean over the center console and wrap my arms tightly around Taylor. He hugs me back just as tight.

"I love you, Tay," I whisper. He nuzzles my ear, replying with the same sentiment. We sit there for a while in silence before pulling apart.

Then I smile at the older man saying,

"If we get started on this laundry now, we might get done before the sun rises." Taylor chuckles quietly.

"Yeah, okay. Lets go."

The 24-hour laundromat is empty except for the lone attendent sitting behind a low table by the door. He looks to be in his early-30's with short-clipped dark hair and a gray stubble surrounding his mouth. He's leaned back in his chair with his feet propped up on his desk, his eyes closed. I'm fairly sure he's asleep.

Even though the laundromat is devoid of people, there are a handful of washers and dryers in use. Taylor leads me away from the sleeping attendent towards a batch of unoccupied machines. As we start separating the lights from the darks, and the colors from the whites, I grow increasingly aware of just how much clothing we actually have. After recognizing multiple articles of Zac's clothing, -- a lucky sock here, a favorite t-shirt there -- I turn to Taylor.

"Did you trick me into washing everyone's clothes?" The blond singer smiles guiltily.

"I wouldn't so much say 'trick' as 'hoping.'" I roll my eyes.

"So not only am I doing my clothes, but your clothes, the kids' clothes and your brothers' clothes." Taylor bites his bottom lip.

"Sorry?" I shake my head, feeding quarters into the machine and turning it on.

"You're lucky you're my favorite," I tell him. "If anyone else had pulled this crap on me, they'd be dead." I give Taylor a sly smile and he grins back at me.

A few minutes later, while searching the pockets of Taylor's favorite jeans, I find a tiny white box with a gold sticker on the lid, the words Pennywise Jewelers and an address printed in black on it. I turn towards my boyfriend.

"What's this?" I ask.

"Hm?" He looks over at what I'm holding and upon seeing the box, smiles. "Open it," he says.

"Open it?" I repeat. Taylor nods, crossing his arms over his chest and turning to lean against the washer with his hip.

"It's for you," he tells me. "I've been meaning to give it to you, but we've just been so busy." He shrugs and stares at me a moment. "Well, go on then," he urges.

I carefully lift the lid from the box revealing a thin white-gold chain with a small circular medallion hanging from it. On closer inspection I notice there's an outline of a heart engraved on one side of the medal and a "T" engraved on the other.

"Oh, Tay," I whisper, too shocked at the expensive gift to say anything else. I lift my gaze to him and just stare.

"Do you like it?" Taylor asks. I nod.

"Yeah, it's beautiful."

Taylor smiles, shuffling the few steps over to me. He takes the necklace from me and gently clasps it around my neck.

"I bought this so no matter how far apart we are, whether we're separated by only a few miles or we're on opposite sides of the world, you'll always know I love you. You'll always have a piece of me with you," he explains. I hug the singer tightly.

"Thank you. It's beautiful." I pull away, smiling at my boyfriend. "You know, if we were on opposite sides of the world I'd still know you love me, even without a necklace," I tell him.

"Yeah, but a necklace is prettier," he replies. I grin.

"Touche." I lean up to kiss him softly, then we get back to work.
