I lean back against the tour bus smoking a cigarette. I can't believe I'm actually standing here waiting for him. I take a deep drag, holding the smoke in my lungs for a moment and then releasing it slowly. The nicotine isn't helping my nerves any. I'm about to walk away when a guy comes hurrying over to the bus. The guy.
"Fancy meeting you here," I call out, tossing my smoke to the ground and crushing it out with my sneaker. The drummer turns to me and grins.
"Hey! Just let me put my stuff down." I nod and he hurries onto the bus.
A minute later Zac comes bounding down the bus stairs and runs over to me. He throws his arms around me, hugging me tight. The scent of his sweat mixed with his cologne floods my nostrils and for a moment I can forget the time and place. All I can remember is the last time his scent took me over, his strong arms around me. The soft touches, the whispered words. For a moment I can forget everything that came after; the years, the anger, how I've dreamed of kicking him so hard in the genitals there won't be any Zac Juniors. All I can think of is the last time he held his sweaty body to mine. The way I had fit so perfectly in the circle of his strong drummer's arms.
But then everything comes flooding back like the rush of an ocean wave. The love, the pain, the joy, the sadness. Tears, anger, jealousy, abandonment. I press my palms flat against Zac's chest and give him a hard shove. He stumbles back, an expression of hurt clearly written on his face.
"Melinda?" he murmurs cocking his head to the side in confusion.
"Don't call me Melinda like you actually care," I spit.
Zac takes a step forward. "I do care." He rakes his hair back from his face. "Just because it's been years doesn't mean I stopped caring."
"Don't give me that crap," I growl. "I know you don't care. How could you... And I just..." I gesture wildly with my hands and then let my arms flop against my sides feeling defeated.
"Melinda, what's wrong?" he asks taking another step closer.
"Don't!" I exclaim holding my hands up to shield myself from the singer. "Don't call me that and don't pretend like you don't know!"
"Oh my god, Mel!" Zac shouts throwing his hands up in the air. "I have no fucking clue what you're talking about! Could you at least give me a hint?!" His warm brown eyes are wild with frustration, anger and confusion. His eyes never lie. Maybe he really doesn't know. But how could that be possible?
I sigh and scrub my face with my hands. I take a deep breath and turn back to Zac, resting my hands on my hips.
"You seriously don't know?" I ask, watching his face for any sign of dishonesty; and as he answers, I see none.
"No, Mel," he says, "I honestly don't know." He sighs then, his shoulders going up and down with the breath. I nod and reach in my bag for my wallet.
With the belief that Zac is truly clueless, I pull a photograph from the folds of my wallet. Handing it over I say, "This is my son, Alex." Then I take a deep breath. "Our son."
