CHAPTER SEVEN

OLIVIA's POV

"There's a pounding on my door. "Mel! Open up!" It's Aaron I move to the side of the door and turn the knob.

Aaron comes bursting into the room. He looks around and when he spots me on the floor, he kicks the door closed and kneels beside me.

"Hey, babe. Why aren't you with Zac? What happened?" he croons.

"I lost my virginity," I sob. Aaron's eyes go wide, his jaw dropping.

"Wait, what?"

"Zac and I, we... And he... And I... Just..." I shake my head.

Aaron rests his hands on my shoulders.

"Mel, deep breath. Deep breath," he instructs. I breathe in deeply, staring into my friend's green eyes, then let it out slowly. "Good," he tells me. "Good. Now start from the beginning and go slow." He helps me to my feet and guides me to the bed as I start to tell him the events of the night.

When I'm finished, Aaron lets out a low whistle.

"Wow. It's been a pretty eventful night for you," he says. I nod, leaning heavily against the bass player.

"What do I do? I completely freaked out on him, I lied to him..."

"Babe, you've kind of been lying to him for the past month. You need to tell him that Mel and Olivia are one in the same," he advises.

"What if he hates me?" I whisper. "I don't, I don't think I could handle it. Not now, not after everything that's happened tonight." Aaron squeezes me gently.

"That's just the risk you're going to have to take," he replies. We lay down, cuddling close.

"I love you, Aaron," I murmur. "Thanks for always being here. Thanks for being my best friend." The bass player kisses my hair whispering,

"I love you too, Mel. All of you." Then I bury my face in his t-shirt and fall into a troubled sleep.

The next morning I roll over and groan.

"You okay?" Aaron asks. I turn my head to look at him.

"Be glad you're not a girl," I tell him.

"Aw, poor baby," he says reaching out to brush my hair from my face. "Is it bad?" I shake my head.

"I just ache a little when I move."

"I'll get you some ibuprofen."

As Aaron climbs out of bed, there's a knock on the door. He looks at me. "Hair." I pull the blankets over my head to hide my natural hair. Thank goodness I did, because it's Zac at the door.

"Aaron?"

"Zac."

"What are you doing here? Do I have the right room? I swore Mel was staying in two-eighty-five," Zac rambles, making me smile from my hiding place.

"Whoa! Slow down there, killer!" Aaron says. "Yes, you have the right room. But Mel's not feeling all that great right now, so..."

"She okay?" Zac asks.

"Yeah, yeah, she'll be fine. Nothing a little Advil and chocolate cake won't cure," Aaron answers.

"Well, that's good. Um... When she's feeling better can you have her come find me? I really need to talk to her."

"Sure. I'll let her know."

"Thanks."

I hear the door close and stick my head out from under the blankets.

"That was close," Aaron states heading towards the bathroom. "This is why you need to tell him the truth. You know I hate running interferance."

"Sorry," I mumble as my friend hands me two Advil and a bottle of water.

"It's okay, babe," he replies. "I still love you." Then he gives me a cheesie grin and I swallow down my pain killers.

MEL's POV

After sound-check I find Zac in the lounge of his bus.

"Hey," I say quietly as I approach. I feel sick at what's to come.

"Hey!" Zac replies cheerfully, looking up from his notebook. I sit down on the couch opposite from him.

"You wanted to talk?"

"Yeah, I did. I mean, I still do!" I can't help smiling at that.

"Well, that's good," I tell the drummer. "I need to talk to you too." Zac nods.

"Oh, okay. But do you mind if I go first?"

"No, not at all. Speak."

The youngest Hanson brother pulls his legs up on to the couch, sitting Indian-style.

"Well, um, it's about Olivia," he says. I nod, feeling the back of my neck heat up.

"Oh? What about her?" I ask, trying to be nonchalant.

"Well, we kind of had a sort-of first date last night," Zac says slowly. I smile at the word date.

"Go on."

"And, um, we had dinner and coffee and it was nice. Really nice."

"Just nice?" I ask feeling disappointed. Zac blushes like an awkward school-boy.

"I don't mean 'nice' like when you say 'Nice to meet you' to a record exec when you're trying to kiss their ass. I mean nice, like air conditioning in an African desert kind of nice." While I shouldn't be surprised that he thinks so highly of the date, I can't help but feel surprised.

"So, um, what's the problem?" I ask.

Zac blushes bright red. "I um... Until last night, I was a virgin." He holds his breath waiting for my response. I blow my bangs out of my face. It's so hard to act surprised when I know exactly what happened.

I look down at my hands clasped so tightly in my lap my knuckles are white. I sigh. "Zac, I can't do this." The drummer scrunches his face up in confusion.

"I don't get it. What can't you do? Talk about sex?" he asks. I sigh again and get up so I can sit next to him.

"I can't sit here and let you talk to me about Olivia like this," I tell him.

"What? Why?"

"Because, Zac." I take a deep breath. "I'm Olivia," I state as I slowly pull off my black and pink wig and shake out my sandy hair.

Zac blinks slowly.

"Who are you?" he asks. "Is this some kind of joke? Are we on some long-ass episode of Punk'd or something?" My eyes fill with tears at the anger in his voice. I shake my head.

"No, this isn't a joke," I tell him. "My name is Olivia Melody Lucas."

"oh my god," Zac groans, roughly pulling his fingers through his hair. "Get out. Just get the fuck out." He speaks through gritted teeth and I can tell he's trying to keep his cool and not explode.

"No," I reply firmly.

A fire burns in Zac's eyes and his nostrils flare. He's silent for a moment. Then, "Fine. If you won't go, I will." The drummer jumps up and stalks to the front of the bus with me right behind him.

"Zac I exclaim grabbing him by the wrist. "Let me explain! Please!" He whips around, yanking his arm from my grasp. It's an uncontrolled movement and I've got a tight grip. All of this combined ends with Zac's very large hand smacking across my face with a loud crack!

Both of our eyes go wide in surprise.

"oh... My... God..." Zac says slowly. "I am so sorry. It was an accident. You know I didn't mean to, right?" I don't answer him, still in too much shock to do so.

ZAC's POV

Oh.My.God. I just hit Mel. Or Olivia. Or whatever the fuck her name is.

"I am so sorry," I tell her. "It was an accident. You know I didn't mean to, right?" Olivia / Mel doesn't answer. She just stands there staring at me looking almost... ashamed.

We stand in silence and I feel like I'm going to burst into tears at any second. But then Olivia speaks.

"Now can I explain?" she asks. I swallow around the lump in my throat and nod. Olivia sighs and gestures to the kitchen table. We slide into our seats onopposite sides of the booth.

"I um, I have the world's worst stage-fright. I'm not even sure how I got talked into joining the band. I mean, I've been known to vomit on stage," Olivia explains. I nod, encouraging her to continue. "So um, the day of our first gig Aaron gave me alittle pep talk. He told me to pretend I was someone else. He said he didn't care if I had to wear a costume and a wig, I was going to get on that stage and perform. So I did and it worked." She shrugs, looking down at her hands clasped on the table top. "Mel's fearless and I'm not." She shrugs again.

"But you lied to me," I respond angrily. "For a month now, you've been lying to me. How could you do that to me? Kate did that. I can't believe you're like her."

"I am not Kate," Olivia growls, her eyes filling with tears. "If I had known we were going to develop this relationship, that we were going to fall in love, I would have told you four months ago at the audition."

"Hind-sight's always twenty-twenty," I mutter, folding my arms across my chest. Olivia looks at me with tears in her blue eyes. Wait. Blue?

"Aren't your eyes green?" I ask.

"Yeah, why?" She gives me a confused look.

"Because your eyes are blue right now. They're always blue when you're Mel," I explain. Olivia rolls her eyes.

"They're called contacts, Zac."

"Oh." I'm feeling somewhat stupid now. I hope it isn't blatantly obvious.

We sit for a moment in silence, then I speak up.

"Maybe this is the end of us, because really... I can't stand being this close to you. I can't even stand to look at you."

Olivia nods. "I understand. But, don't kick us off the tour. Don't punish my guys for something I did." I look down at the table and nod. Then I raise my eyes back to her.

"I'm not going to kick an amazing band off this tour just because you're a bitch," I state. Olivia winces. I can tell my words have stung her. But I can't help myself, I feel so... betrayed.

Tears rolling down her face, Olivia replies, "I love you, Zac. I probably always will. I'm so sorry." Then she jumps up and flees from the bus.
