CHAPTER EIGHT

After the little mini-concert, we all go back to Ken and Joyce's for dinner. Joyce, Lynn and my mom made a ton of food. Somehow, between the time dinner started and cake and ice cream ended, I managed to wind up with River and Penny in my lap. I, of course, didn't mind one bit. But when the children were removed so I could open my presents, I found I had a lap full of cake. That got a laugh out of everyone.

When I finished thanking my mom for my last gift, Zac spoke up.

"You're not done," he says, setting a large package down on the table in front of me. I raise an eyebrow and start to unwrap my gift. I open the lid of the box and just stare for a moment. Then I pull a brand new laptop from inside.

Everyone ooh's and aw's at the expensive gift. I turn to the Hanson brothers, who are all grinning.

"You guys, this is way too much," I tell them. "Seriously. It's too much."

"Don't worry about it," Zac says. We just figured it's be a good way for you to keep in touch with everyone while you're on the road with us." I smile.

"Thank you. I love it."

Not expecting anything else, I begin to pack up my stuff. But then Taylor puts another present on the table.

"Another one?" I ask.

"Well, everyone on the tour crew gets one, but we thought it'd be more fun to wrap yours up," Taylor tells me. I carefully pull the paper off the package to find a new cell phone.

"It's already got all the numbers you'll ever need on it," Isaac says.

"Thanks you guys," I reply and get up to hug the three brothers. I give Taylor an extra squeeze and he whispers against my ear.

"Happy Birthday."

Hours later I'm on the bus with my laptop when Taylor comes in and sits next to me.

"What'cha doin?" he asks.

"Just checkin' out the 'puter," I tell him, shutting the device down and placing it on a nearby shelf. I smile at the blond and he returns the gesture.

"So, are you having a good birthday?" he asks. I grin.

"Yeah. It's been great," I answer.

"Good, I'm glad," he replies.

We just sit, looking at each other for a moment. Then we lean in and just as our lips are about to touch, everyone from .medicated.kisses. walks in. I can feel myself blushing fiercely.

"Hey, crazy kids!" Alanna says, plopping down across from me.

"Hey," I reply. But before anything else is said, Zac walks in with a crying baby.

"Your kid's hungry," he announces. I reach for River as Taylor gets up to make a bottle.

Everyone's eyes are on me as I cradle the little boy in my arms and rock him gently.

"Wow, you're good at that," Alanna whispers when River starts to quiet down. I flash a grin her way.

"Well, it is my job," I point out. Aaron snorts. I look over at him to see a very irritated expression on his face. I frown. Then Taylor comes back with the bottle.

Taylor sits close to me, looking over my shoulder at his son, stroking his soft hair.

"So this is what you're going to be doing all day, every day?" Alanna asks. I nod.

"Yeah. And it's completely worth it," I tell her.

"Yeah right," Aaron mutters. I look at him confused.

"Excuse me?" He rolls his eyes at me.

"It's not like you're doing this for the kids," he says. "You're just in it for the money. How much is he really paying you? Do you get a bonus for sleeping with him?" I look at him incredulously.

"What is wrong with you?!" Aaron sneers at me and then quickly leaves.

Everyone's silent. I turn to Alanna and blink slowly.

"What crawled up his ass and died?"

"He's mad at you," Alanna answers simply.

"Well, obviously. But why?" I ask.

"Because he's in love with you," Alanna says. I just stare at her.

"Really?" She raises an eyebrow at me. I shake my head and hand the baby to Taylor.

"Take him," I say. "I'll be back." Then I get up to go find the angry bass player.

I find Aaron smoking a cigarette at the front of the bus. I cross my arms over my chest and glare at the back of his head.

"What is your issue?" I ask him. He whirls around, obviously startled. When he finds it's me, his eyes narrow and he takes a puff on his cigarette.

"Leave me alone," he says quietly.

"No," I reply sternly. "You are a guest here and you have no right to talk to me the way you did. Now what the fuck is your problem?!"

"You!" Aaron exclaims. "You're my problem! You've known this guy for, like, a day and you're already trying to get into each other's pants!"

I roll my eyes.

"Oh my god." I shake my head. This is so ridiculous. "You have no right to get pissed off at me because someone is actually showing interest in me, when you're in love with me and haven't spoken more than two words to me in a year and a half! God, Aaron!" I shake my head again. "Do you know how long I've been waiting to hear that you love me?"

Aaron looks at me blankly.

"What?" I rub my face.

"Aaron..." I can only look at him while I gather the words I need to say. "I've had a crush on you since the first time I saw you on stage." The bass player raises an eyebrow.

"Why didn't you say anything?" he asks gently.

"Would you have told someone you like them if they never talk to you or reply to comments you leave them on their myspace? For a year and a half? And the one time they did talk to you was because you were buying their band's merch?" Aaron doesn't respond.

"It's been so long since anyone has shown this kind of interest in me. I wasn't going to wait a lifetime for you, Aaron. I really like Taylor. And, yeah, it's only been a day, but he's been nicer and sweeter and more kind to me and has talked to me more than you ever have and I see you at least once a month. You can't have it both ways, Aaron."

I look down at my battered Chucks.

"I'm sorry," Aaron says softly. I look up to find him just inches away from me. "I'm sorry," he says again. "Can we start over?" I don't know what to say to him, he's so close. I don't think I can speak.

Then Aaron takes my face in his hands and gently presses his mouth to mine. I just stand there stunned. But once my lips start to react, someone clears their throat. I quickly pull away from the bassist and turn to see who the third party is. Just my luck, it's Taylor.

"Is everything okay out here?" he asks. I nod, discreetly wiping at my eye. What are these boys doing to me?

"You sure?" Taylor asks. I nod again.

"Yeah, Tay. Everything's fine. I'll be in in a minute." Taylor nods.

"Okay." Then he heads back on the bus.

After I'm confident Taylor isn't watching through the windshield, I turn back to Aaron. He's looking at the ground, hands shoved in his pockets.

"Look, if you want to start over and be friends, that's fine. I'd like that," I tell him. "But I want to see where this thing with Taylor is going." Aaron nods.

"Yeah, okay." I reach over to hug him.

"We're okay," I assure him quietly. Aaron nods again, squeezing me tightly.
