EPILOGUE

ZAC’S POV
One Year Later

After putting Jenna down for her nap, I make my way across the hall to the room I share with my husband and the newest member of our family. I lean against the door frame listening as Taylor sings a quiet lullaby to the bundle of pink in his arms. When he’s finished I quietly enter the room, moving to stand behind him. I wrap my arms around his waist and lean my head against his. “Is Jenna asleep?” Taylor asks.

“Yeah,” I sigh. “But it wasn’t easy. She wanted to stay up and play with her new little sister.”

The corner of Taylor’s mouth that I can see turns up in a smile. “Can you blame her?”

I chuckle quietly. “No, that I can’t.” We’re both silent for a moment, staring down at our little bundle of joy. “Tay, are you… Are you happy that we adopted this time?” I ask.

“What? Of course,” Taylor answers. “Why are you asking?”

“I just… I know what it’s like to have your own child being born right in front of you. I was just wondering if you were upset that we couldn’t find a surrogate for you,” I explain.

“I was upset at first,” Taylor says. “But now that I’ve got this beautiful little girl in my arms, I could care less who her biological parents are. She’s ours, Zac, completely ours.”

I can’t help the smile that comes over my face. “I couldn’t be happier,” I tell him honestly.

“Good,” he replies, turning his head to kiss my cheek. I smile as he pulls away, moving over to our bed and gently placing our daughter in the bassinet beside it. Then he climbs up on the bed and lays down, beckoning me over with a wave of his hand. I grin and make my way over to him, crawling up next to him. I lay down behind him, spooning him, wrapping my arms around him tightly.

I nuzzle the back of my husband’s neck. “I love you, Tay,” I murmur kissing his soft skin.

He pulls my arms around him tighter. “I love you too,” he replies.

The little baby in the basinet whines and Taylor reaches over to rub her belly. “It’s okay, Penny,” he coos. “It’s okay.” When the little one quiets down, Taylor turns around in my arms. “Hey,” he murmurs softly.

“Hey,” I whisper back.

He runs his fingers through my hair and strokes my cheek lightly. “I can’t believe we only brought her home today,” he says quietly.

I lean in to his touch, nodding. “I know. I mean, she’s only four days old, but it seems like we’ve had her for a lifetime.” Taylor nods in agreement and there’s a beat of silence. “Tay?”

“Hmm?”

“When you first realized you loved me, did you ever think we’d end up like this?” I ask.

Taylor shakes his head with a grin. “God no. I didn’t think you’d ever feel the same about me. But I will admit that I always fantasized that we’d end up like this. How about you?”

I play with the cross hanging around his neck and shake my head. “I thought you’d always be my big brother.” I lift my gaze back to his. “Now I can’t remember what it’s like to be your brother. I don’t remember life without being together, in this way.”

Taylor smiles, his eyes tearing up, but he blinks the drops back. “Really?” he asks. I can only nod. “I can’t believe we have two kids already,” he says quietly.

I grin. “I know.” We’re quiet for a moment. “Is this really our life?” I whisper.

Taylor smiles affectionately. “Yeah, it is. Got a problem with that?” he teases, his soft smile turning in to a smirk.

I laugh lightly. “No problem at all,” I tell him. “It’s a dream come true actually.” Taylor’s soft smile comes back to his face, his eyes misting.

“Is it really?” he asks. I nod, wiping under his eye to catch a tear on the pad of my thumb.

“Why are you crying?” I ask quietly.

“Because…” He pauses, more tears forming and sliding down his face. He licks over his lips and swallows thickly. “It’s just… This life is really a dream come true for you?”

I nod. “Yeah, it is. You’re a dream come true. Our babies are a dream come true. Our family is a dream come true. I love everything about our life. It’s perfect. You’re perfect,” I murmur, tucking his hair behind his ear. Then I lean in, pressing my lips gently to his. We share sweet little pecks until we drift to sleep. I don’t blame us. We’re exhausted from the excitement of the past few days of our new baby and the stress of the months previous wondering if we were going to get approved.

I always knew I’d end up with my brother. I just never knew how utterly perfect it would be.

The End
