ZAC’S POV
When I finish my shower and enter the adjoining bedroom, I find my girlfriend Olivia sitting on the bed, her hand over her stomach, her face etched in pain. I rush over to her and kneel at her feet. “Liv, what’s wrong?” I ask. “Is it the baby?” She nods, biting her lip. “Let me get dressed and I’ll take you to the hospital.” She nods again and groans. “It’s going to be okay,” I murmur, kissing her head as I stand, then race around the room to find some clean clothes.
By the time I’m dressed, Olivia is in immense pain and the only thing I can think is that we’re going to lose this baby if we don’t get to the ER soon. I almost have to carry her out to the car it’s so painful for her. I try my hardest not to cry as I drive as fast and as safely as I can to the local hospital.
When we get to our destination, Olivia is in too much pain to walk, so I scoop her small body from the front seat and hurry to the sliding doors of the emergency room. “I need help!” I call out when I get to the lobby. A nurse comes running over. “She’s four months pregnant and she’s having severe pain,” I tell her before she even asks. The nurse grabs a chart and immediately rushes us through another set of doors to the exam rooms.
The nurse ushers us in to a curtained off area and I lay my lover down gently on the gurney. The nurse makes quick work of filling out the chart, asking questions about all of Olivia’s symptoms, even things that didn’t seem relevant. When she’s done, she takes Olivia’s temperature and blood pressure. Then she hangs an IV drip of saline telling us that the doctor will most likely need IV access at some point.
When she leaves, I take Olivia’s hand in mine, sandwiching the petite hand in my larger ones. I lean down to kiss her on the forehead. “It’s gonna be okay,” I murmur. As I straighten back up she whispers my name. “What is it, Sweetie?” I ask, leaning back down to her.
“She’s gone,” she murmurs.
“The nurse?” I ask confused.
Olivia shakes her head. “Our daughter.”
My world comes crashing down at that moment. I know in my heart that she’s right.
