CHAPTER ELEVEN

Bella was pissed and didn’t talk to Tommy the whole ride to Cassidy Haley’s house. She had somehow by the grace of god managed to dodge Adam in person throughout the holiday season. She hadn’t wanted to explain her baby bump before she had the paternity results. She wanted to be able to definitively tell Adam who the babies’ father or fathers were when he found out about the pregnancy. But no, of course not. Her life just can’t be that easy.

Cassidy was throwing Adam a surprise party for his birthday and, of course, the party was to take place just three weeks before Bella’s amniocentesis. Never mind that she wouldn’t have the results until two weeks after that. And there was no hiding her belly that had grown even bigger in the past five weeks. She had wanted to stay home and not even attend the party, but Tommy had insisted and used those horrible puppy-dog eyes that could guilt her in to doing anything even if there was nothing to feel guilty about.

That was why they were now pulling up in front of Cassidy’s house in silence, running late. Tommy was sure Adam had already showed up as Cassidy had said that Adam would be arriving promptly at seven thirty and it was now quarter of eight.

Tommy being the ever polite gentleman that he was, ran around to the passenger’s side door and opened it for Bella, holding his hand out to help her. Bella being the ever stubborn, hormone-filled pregnant woman that she was, slapped his hand away and then struggled from the car. Tommy sighed and walked beside her up the walk-way, hands stuffed in his pockets. Christmas had been hard enough without his dad and Bella had been so kind and caring and supportive. But now she was mad at him and he couldn’t stand it. Instead of being angry right back though, he was depressed over the situation.

This is going to be a great party, he thought with sarcasm. Maybe we should have just stayed home.

When they got to the door, Bella rang the bell. The door opened after only a moment and the two were surprised to find Adam smiling at them. “You guys are so late,” he said, grabbing Bella by the hand and pulling her in to the house. He politely took her coat and when she turned around to face him, his jaw dropped. “Bella, I… you… Oh my gosh. Congratulations!” Adam stuttered. Then he pulled her in to a tight hug. She hugged him back, burying her face in his chest, inhaling deeply. His scent was soothing to her frayed nerves.

Adam could tell something was wrong by the depressed look on Tommy’s face and the way Bella was just clinging to him at the moment. Adam bent his head down to kiss the top of Bella’s head. “What’s wrong?” he asked in to her hair. That’s all it took for Bella’s shoulders to shake as she tried to hold back her sobs. This is not how she had wanted to do this. But she pulled back and looked up in to Adam’s bright blue eyes.

“We need to talk,” she said softly. Adam nodded, his face full of concern as he took Bella by the hand and led her to a quiet room away from the party where they could be alone. He led her to Cassidy’s bedroom and shut the door. Bella stood at the piano and plunked a few keys before turning around to face Adam. He was sitting on the bed and he patted the space next to him.

“Come talk to me,” he commanded gently. Bella nodded and moved to the bed to sit down. When she did, Adam wrapped his arms around her tightly, pulling her against his side. “Now, tell me what’s going on with you and Tommy.”

Bella sighed. “It’s the babies,” she said.

“Babies?” Adam asked.

Bella nodded. “It’s twins,” she answered softly.

“Oh wow! Bella, that’s amazing! How is Tommy not excited about this?”

“It’s not that,” Bella told Adam. “When we found out that it was twins, I thought he was going to pass out from the joy of it.”

“Then what’s wrong, baby?” he asked.

“It’s just… Tommy may not be the father,” Bella answered quietly.

“Oh,” Adam murmured, at a loss of what to say.

After a scary moment of silence for Bella, Adam spoke again. “So um, you two on the rocks because of it?” he asked.

Bella shook her head. “It’s not that. He knew it was a possibility all along.”

“He did?”

Bella nodded. “Of course, he was there,” she said.

“Wait, he was…” Adam let his sentence trail off as it dawned on him. “You’re talking about the night we met, aren’t you?” Bella nodded, her hands clasped over her lap, just staring down at them. “Are you… You just… When were you going to tell me?” Adam asked.

“I wanted to wait until I got the test results back,” Bella murmured. “This is… Adam, this is so complicated. It almost sounds made up.”

“What are you talking about? It’s either me or Tommy, isn’t it?” Adam replied.

Bella took a deep breath and looked up at her friend. “It’s way more complicated than that. But you two are the only possible fathers.”

“Than how is it more complicated? I don’t understand.” Adam furrowed his eyebrows.

“Because it’s twins, there’s a possibility that you and Tommy could have fathered one of the babies,” Bella told him.

“How… just like… How is that even possible?” Adam asked.

“If the twins are fraternal, meaning they were two separate eggs fertilized by two separate sperm, there’s a chance that both of you could have fathered one of the twins… at the same time,” Bella explained.

“But that’s just… That’s just wrong,” Adam said.

“Wrong?” Bella asked confused.

“It’s just… It’s not right,” Adam told her. “I can’t…” He shook his head, letting go of Bella. “I can’t be a part of this. I just can’t.”

“What? Adam, what are you saying?”

“I’m saying, if that’s the case, that we each fathered one, I don’t want to be a part of it. I can’t…” He shook his head again. “That would screw those kids up so fucking badly. I just can’t do it to them.”

“And what if they’re both yours, huh? They’ll still have two dads. Tommy isn’t going anywhere.”

“Tommy can have them,” Adam replied bluntly. “I’m not ready for kids.”

“But, Adam…” Bella protested, her eyes filling with tears.

“I’m sorry, Bell,” he murmured.

Bella was hurt beyond belief. She didn’t know how to process any of this. So she silently stood and pulled a small box and a plain envelope from her bag and placed them on the bed beside Adam. Then she leaned down to him, kissing him on the head. “Happy Birthday, Addie,” she whispered. “And believe me, if one or both of these babies are yours, you will be responsible for them. You will step up and take responsibility. I wasn’t the only one there that night and it’s not like you didn’t want to be with me.” Then Bella stood up straight, tilting her chin up, and quietly walked from the room.

Bella found Tommy right away, tears streaming down her face. “Can we go home?” she asked in a small voice.

“Are you sure you want to go home with me?” Tommy asked.

Bella nodded. “I’m sorry,” she murmured. “I’m sorry for getting mad at you, but I knew this was how it was going to end. I knew he wouldn’t…” She choked on a sob.

Tommy pulled her close. “Shh, it’s okay,” he told her quietly. “Lets just get our coats and go, okay?” Bella nodded and let Tommy hold her against his side as he moved to the hallway closet to get their jackets. Then they climbed in the car and went home.
