CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Tommy had really wanted to take Bella back home for Valentine’s Day since it also happened to be her twenty-sixth birthday. He wanted her to be able to visit her friends and family and she may have mentioned a time or two that for some crazy reason she actually missed the snow. Tommy checked with Dr. House to make sure that it was okay for Bella to fly, but of course she wouldn’t say yes to a flight unless she heard it from the doctor himself and when she had, she was super excited. Bella couldn’t wait to get home and see her father. She’d never spent a birthday away from him and Tommy knew how much it meant to her.

But now here they were, February fourteenth, and they were snowed in at the Manchester Airport hotel. There had been a blizzard as they were flying in and almost couldn’t land because of it. Bella had teared up when she found out they wouldn’t be able to make it to her father’s even though it was just twenty-five minutes away and usually a quick trip in nice weather.

Bella sat back against the pillows on the queen-size bed, tears flowing down her cheeks as she dialed her father’s familiar number. It only rang once before her father answered. “Bella Bear!” he greeted her cheerfully.

“Hi, Papa Bear,” she murmured.

“What’s wrong, sweetie?” Bart Connor asked.

Bella sniffled. “We’re snowed in.”

“Aw, sweetie, it’s okay. I’ll see you tomorrow. The roads should be okay by then,” Bart assured his daughter.

“But that’s not the point,” Bella replied. “I was so disappointed because I thought I was going to be away from you and Cherry and JD for my birthday. Then Tommy surprised me and now it’s ruined. I’m here but I still don’t have my family.” She pouted even though her father couldn’t see her.

“Oh, Bella Bear,” Bart sighed. “You’re twenty-six now. You don’t need to be with your daddy on your birthday.”

“Yes I do,” she muttered. “Remember, I’m a daddy’s girl.”

Bart chuckled quietly. “Yes, I remember. But you need to remember that in life, we don’t always get what we want.”

“Yeah, well, I’m not getting what I need either,” Bella retorted. On the other end of the line she heard her father’s loud belly laugh. “Hey, this isn’t funny,” she whined.

Just then, Tommy crawled up on the bed beside Bella and laid his head on her chest so his chin touched the top of her ever-growing belly. Bella sighed and stroked Tommy’s hair, the simple action calming her a little. “Promise I’ll see you tomorrow?” she asked.

“Of course, sweetie,” Bart answered. “Even if I have to break out the snow-shoes and walk all the way there.”

“I love you, Papa Bear,” Bella told her father quietly.

“I love you too, Bella Bear,” he replied. “And one thing before I go.”

“What’s that?”

“Happy birthday my little bear cub. I can’t wait to see you tomorrow and meet this Tommy Joe character.”

“Aw, Dad, he’s not a character. He’s the love of my life.”

Bella heard her father sigh. “I wish you wouldn’t say that about him before I’ve even met him,” he told her.

“I love you, Papa,” Bella replied. “You’ll always be my number one guy.”

“Promise?”

“Cross my heart.” With another set of I love you’s and another Happy Birthday, Bella and Bart hung up.

Bella sighed and turned her face down to press a kiss to Tommy’s hair. Tommy sat up to look at Bella, brushing her hair behind her ear. “You okay?” he asked. She shook her head, tears rolling down her cheeks, and held her arms out to him. Tommy pulled her close, hugging her tightly. “It’s okay,” he murmured, kissing her head. “You’ll be able to see everyone tomorrow.”

“It’s not the same,” Bella muttered in to his collarbone.

“I know it’s not,” Tommy replied. Then more quietly he said, “I’m sorry my plan didn’t work out.”

Bella pulled back enough to look at her boyfriend. “It’s not your fault,” she told him.

“I know, but I’m disappointed for you,” he said. “This was going to be the last time before the twins came that you’d be able to fly out here, ya know?”

Bella nodded. “Yeah, but I’m still here and I still get to see everyone and the snow was not your fault.”

Tommy leaned forward to rub his nose against Bella’s. “Thank you for making me feel better when it should be the other way around.”

Bella laughed lightly. “No problem my little pixie.”

Tommy smiled at her. “Do you feel better now?”

Bella laughed again. “Actually, I do because I am here and I do get to see everyone and…” Her eyes twinkled. “There’s snow!”

Tommy chuckled. “I was hoping there’d be snow for your birthday, especially new snow since you like when it’s bright white, but I never wanted so much!” Bella giggled, pressing her face in to Tommy’s neck.

“Be careful what you wish for, Pixie-boy,” she said, making Tommy laugh again.
