CHAPTER EIGHT
Taylor's POV
JD and I are standing in front of the stage as Paul and Alec's band sets up their equipment. I tell JD that I'm going to get a drink and ask if she wants one too. She shakes her head and I walk over to the bar.
I lean against the wooden bar, waiting for the bartender to come take my order. As I'm waiting, I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn to find Zac and Andy. I grin and hug the shorter blond. Then I turn to Zac. There's something in the look in his eyes tonight. Something different, but exciting. I lean in to hug him. He gives me a squeeze. As I pull back, I swear I feel his lips brush my neck. I smile shyly.
The bartender comes over then.
"You want something?" I ask my brother and his friend. Zac shakes his head, but Andy nods. I turn to the bartender.
"Two waters," I say. He nods and goes to fill the order. "So you decided to come," I say to Andy. She nods, tucking her hair behind her ear.
"I have loyalties to the band other than Alec," she explains. I nod. The bartender sets two bottles of water on the bar. I pick them both up, handing one to Andy. Then I turn to go back to JD, but stop. I look back at Zac and Andy.
"You guys comin?" Andy shakes her head.
"I'd rather not get too close." I nod, then head back to the stage.
Andy's POV
I lean into Zac as Taylor walks away.
"You okay?" Zac asks. I nod.
"Yeah. Just kind of wishing Alec and I hadn't fought." Zac nods.
"I know the feeling."
Zac keeps his arm around my shoulders for a while. But then the band starts playing an all too familiar tune. Zac's arm drops from my body as he turns to look at me.
"How do they know this?" he asks.
"Alec found it on my shelf and listened to it," I answer.
"But why are they playing it?" I sigh.
"Alec's trying to sweet-talk me." I hear Paul asking Zac and myself to come on stage. I grab my friend's hand. "Come on." I drag him over to and then up on stage. Paul hands us each a microphone. I squeeze Zac's hand and we begin to sing this song we'd written years ago.
ZAC: We're soarin', flying. There's not a star in Heaven that we can't reach.
ANDY: If we're tryin'. So we're breakin' free.
ZAC: You know the world can see us in a way that's different than who we are.
ANDY: Creating space between us, 'til we're separate hearts.
BOTH: But your faith, it gives me strength. Strength to believe...
ZAC: We're breakin' free
ANDY: We're soarin'
ZAC: Flyin'
BOTH: There's not a star in Heaven that we can't reach
ZAC: If we're tryin'
BOTH: Yeah, we're breaking free
ZAC: Oh, we're breakin' free
ANDY: Ohhh
ZAC: Can you feel it building? Like a wave the ocean just can't control
ANDY: Connected by a feelin' Oh, in our very souls
BOTH: Rising 'til it lifts us up, so everyone can see...
ZAC: We're breaking free
ANDY: We're soarin'
ZAC: Flyin'
BOTH: There's not a star in Heaven that we can't reach.
ZAC: If we're tryin'
BOTH: Yeah, we're breakin' free
ZAC: Oh, we're breakin' free
ANDY: Oh, runnin'
ZAC: Climbin' To get to that place
BOTH: To be all that we can be
ZAC: Now's the time
BOTH: So we're breakin' free
ZAC: We're breakin' free
ANDY: Oh, yeah
ZAC: More than hope. More than faith.
ANDY: This is truth. This is fate, and together,
BOTH: We see it comin'
ZAC: More than you. More than me.
ANDY: Not a want, but a need
BOTH: Both of us breakin' free
ANDY: Soarin'
ZAC: Flyin'
BOTH: There's not a star in Heaven that we can't reach. If we're tryin'
ZAC: Yeah, we're breakin' free
ANDY: Breakin' free. We're runnin'
ZAC: Oh, climbin'
BOTH: To get to the place to be all that we can be. Now's the time.
ZAC: Now's the time, yeah
ANDY: So we're breakin' free
ZAC: Oh, we're breakin' free
ANDY: Ohhhh.
BOTH: You know the world can see us in a way that's different than who we are.
Zac and I take a bow, then scurry off stage.
