CHAPTER TEN
ZAC's POV
April 26, 2008 - Hampton Beach, New Hampshire
I'm standing at the side of the stage, just out of view of the fans who are singing along to Late Night Romance. I'm so nervous. My palms are sweaty and I'm pretty sure I'm going to vomit.
"Oh my god, what am I doing? I can't do this," I say to no one in particular as I turn on my heel to flee, my nerves getting the better of me.
Taylor grabs me by the shoulders before I can get away and turns me back towards the stage.
"Oh no you don't," he says. "I'm not letting you chicken out again." My brother puts his hands on his hips giving me his 'I mean business, Mister' look he always uses on Ezra.
"Now why are you so nervous?" he asks. "You love her, don't you?" I nod, swallowing nervously. "You want to be with her, don't you?" I nod again. "Then what's the problem?"
"I-I don't want her to say no," I stutter. "I'd rather live in ignorant bliss than be rejected."
Taylor rolls his eyes at me. Then he puts his hands on my shoulders and connects his baby-blue gaze with my brown one. "She's not going to say no."
"You don't know that," I whine. Taylor smacks my cheek lightly making me pout.
"I do know it," he says. "You would too if you just had a little faith." I blow my hair from my face with a sigh.
"Faith is non-existent right now."
My brother drops his arms to his sides. "What does your heart tell you?"
"I don't, I don't know."
"Yes, you do. Now close your eyes and listen," he instructs. I take a deep breath, feeling silly as I do what I'm told.
With my eyes closed all I can hear is the music and Olivia's voice.
"Just don't say we could be different. 'Cause we both know that this could be the last chance that I get. 'Cause we both know that this will be the last chance that I get. So any time you need me I'll be right behind you. Call me if you're lost, 'cause I'll be there to find you. Any time you need me just call me and I'll be there. Oooh. Just don't say that we could be different 'cause you know that we're the same."
My eyes pop open and I look at my older brother. He's turned away from me, watching the band on stage. I can't help but wonder if he did that on purpose or if it was fate. All I know is that those words have restored my confidence, and more importantly, my faith in my feelings for Olivia.
When the song ends with a whispered, "Bang. Bang," Taylor claps me on the shoulder.
"Break a leg, little brother," he tells me. Taking a deep breath, I walk onto the stage in view of a thousand people.
Olivia is facing away from me as she takes a drink of water. The crowd hums with excitement as I kneel behind my girlfriend, microphone and ring in hand. I don't say anything, just wait. Then a group of girls from the front row shout.
"Turn around!"
Olivia slowly turns, confusion on her face. She looks down, taking in the sight of me in a traditional proposal stance. Her eyes fill with tears, tilting her head to the side just slightly.
I raise a shaking hand, lifting the microphone to my mouth.
"A great singer once said that when you've lost your way all you have to do is listen to your heart, and it will always lead you back to the one you love," I say, tears filling my eyes. I have no clue if it's from pure love or fear of rejection.
"When I met you, the day I met you, there was no ignoring what my heart had to say because it was screaming at me. It was telling me that you're the one." I lick my suddenly dry lips and take Olivia's hand in mine.
"I've never once doubted it either. Not even during the hard times." I notice my girlfriend swallow hard, tears running down her cheeks. I know she's remembering the time she revealed her true identity to me, how it almost ended us.
"You are it, Livvie. You are my one and only. I want to be wherever you are for a lifetime, our lifetime. Please say you'll marry me." Then I wait nervously.
After what seems like an eternity of absolute silence, Olivia lifts her mic.
"Well, damn," she says, "you ruined my surprise." My eyes go wide.
"What?" Olivia laughs and tugs me to my feet. She pulls me over to my drum kit and points. On the snare, in Sharpie is scrawled,
You're all I've ever wanted. Marry me. Always & Froever, Livvie.
I laugh and pull Olivia into a tight hug.
"I love you," I tell her.
"I love you too," she replies. I slip the sapphire and diamond engagement ring onto her slender finger. Then we kiss, much to the delight of the crowd who are cheering louder than ever before. With a last little squeeze of the fingers, I move off the stage grinning so widely my face hurts. But I really can't stop.
I turn to watch the stage as Olivia says, "Whose feeling the love?" The crowd cheers. "That's what I'm talkin 'bout!" She moves towards Sal's drums saying, "Now this calls for a little romance... with a twist! A little Late Night Romance!" She climbs up onto Sal's kick drum. "This goes out to all the fantastic gentlemen out there." As Sal starts a beat, she looks over at me and winks.
"It's not about revenge, it's just something that I do!" Then Olivia does a back flip off the drums as the whole band starts to play. The audience goes into an uproar and I stick my fingers in my mouth, letting out the loudest whistle that I can.
"I've got your throat in my hands, I can feel your pulse beating, but I can't see you anymore. It's just the sound of your voice and the smell of the blood I left drying on your kitchen floor." CLAP! CLAP! "I was so sick of waiting for your time to end that I started creating a new and better man. From the left-over parts I wouldn't call this mutilation. I've been finger-painting scenes of hiding and escaping together."
I'm so into the music that when a hand comes down on my shoulder, I jump. I turn to see my brother laughing at me.
"Jeezus, Taylor," I mutter.
"Sorry," he chuckles. "Feeling better?" I nod.
"Much."
"That's good." I look at my brother.
"I'm really happy, Tay. I mean, really happy."
He smiles at me. "I can tell. You're smiling like an idiot." I blush, slapping him in the arm.
"Shuddup." Taylor squeezes my shoulder saying,
"I'm happy for you, bro."
"Thanks," I reply, then turn back to the stage.
"You are a jigsaw puzzle now and I just can't seem to figure out how to get you back together. And you are my jigsaw puzzle now and I'm just dying to figure out how I'm gonna get you back together..."
* * *
For the first time in three days we get to stay at a hotel. It's right on the boardwalk over-looking the beach. When we get all our stuff into our room, I turn to my beautiful fiance and say,
"Lets go to the beach." She looks at me surprised.
"You want to go to the beach?" she asks. I nod eagerly.
"Yeah, it's a beautiful night. C'mon, please?"
"I know it's late April, but it's freezing out."
I wiggle my eyebrows suggestively. "I'll keep you warm. Please?" I give her puppy eyes and she folds like a napkin.
"Oh alright. Lets go." Heading towards the door she says, "But if my lips get blue, you have to heat them up." Olivia grins playfully. I return the look.
"I promise to do whatever it takes to keep you warm. Scout's honor."
Once on the sand in the moonlight I pull my future-wife close, nuzzling against her cheek.
"I love you," I murmur.
"I love you too," she replies quietly. Then she looks up at me. "This is perfect, ya know?" I nod.
"Yeah, it is."
Olivia bites her lip and looks out at the ocean.
"Zac, I'm..."
"What? What is it?" I ask gently turning her face so she's looking at me. Her pretty green and gold eyes are wet with tears. I frown. "What's wrong?" Olivia laughs, her hair whipping around her face in the wind.
"Nothing's wrong, Zac. I'm just..." She giggles. "I'm pregnant!"
My eyes go wide in surprise. Olivia is laughing and crying all at once. "We're having a baby?" I whisper. Olivia nods, giggling a little. "We're having a baby. We're having a baby!" I let out a whoop and run in a small victory circle, making Olivia laugh more. I run back over to her, throwing my arms around her and lifting her off her feet.
After spinning in a circle I set my fiance back down, smiling at her.
"We're having a baby," I say softly. I stroke her hair and kiss her forehead. "A baby," I whisper. Olivia nods.
"Yes, a baby." There's a beat of silence when she looks out over the waves. "Are you happy?" she asks quietly.
"Completely," I answer. "Completely happy. Are you?" Olivia looks up at me and smiles.
"Only every second I'm with you."
"I love you," I tell her.
"I love you too," she replies. I kiss her softly and slide my hand over her belly.
"So how long till we meet the newest Hanson?" I ask.
"About seven months," Olivia answers. I smile, pulling her close.
"I can't wait," I whisper in her ear.
"Me either," she replies softly.
We end up going back to the hotel and making a nest of blankets by the sliding glass doors that lead out to the balcony. We lay together, wrapped in each other's arms, watching the sun rise over the ocean. I'm so content with life right now. I know this is where I want to be. I know Olivia is the one I want to be with. Always and Forever.
