Writing Prompt #002: past
I let Eli accompany me to my doctor’s appointment. We sit silently in the waiting room. As we sit here I think about the past, back when we met.
-FLASHBACK-
One Year Earlier
My best friend has dragged me to a party so she can flirt with some guy who is supposedly going to be here. Most of the people here are drunk as skunks. Like ninety percent of them. I just hope my friend stays sober. I don’t want to be carrying her drunk ass home. After wandering around for a bit I decide to go sit by the pool. Amazingly enough there’s no one out there.
I’m all alone in the moonlight, my feet dangling into the clear blue chlorinated water. I hear the patio door open and close, then footsteps.
“Do you mind if I sit here?” I look up to see a gorgeous man standing above me. Longish black hair, blue eyes. I can’t tell how tall is from my sitting position, but at the moment I don’t care.
“Free poolside,” I tell him with a little wave of the hand. He sits down next to me. Not close enough to be blatantly saying he’s trying to get in my pants, but close enough to suggest he’s interested in a conversation.
“I’m Eli, by the way,” he says.
“Emmie,” I reply. “It’s nice to meet you.” He smiles this amazing smile.
“It’s nice to meet you too. I think you’re the first person I’ve talked to that wasn’t stumbling drunk.” I laugh.
“Yeah, same here.” There’s a beat of silence. “So what’s a nice sober guy like you doing at a party like this?” He smiles again.
“My friend insisted I come,” he tells me.
I nod. “I know the feeling. My friend made me come to be her wingman, but I’m pretty sure she’s doing just fine on her own.”
Eli and I talk the night away. He’s completely respectful and gentlemanly. So much so that after our first date he shook my hand. The second date he hugged me. The third date he hugged me and when he pulled away, he kissed me on the cheek.
As he starts to back away, a smile on his face, I put my hands on my hips.
“Are you gay?” I ask. Eli stops, his eyes going wide.
“No. Why would you ask that?”
“You like me, don’t you?” I ask. Eli screws his face up in confusion.
“Yeah, I like you a lot. Emmie, where is this coming from?”
I sigh. “Why haven’t you kissed me goodnight yet? I mean, usually they say don’t sleep with a guy till the third date. But you haven’t even kissed me yet.”
Eli walks back over to me. “I was just trying to be respectful, have some manners.” He shrugs.
“Manners and respect are nice,” I tell him. “But a little disrespect once in a while isn’t so bad.” Eli wraps his arms around my waist. “I mean, I just thought-” I’m interrupted by his lips on mine. It’s a short soft kiss but none the less amazing.
When Eli pulls back, I keep my eyes closed. “Whoa,” I whisper.
“What?” Eli asks. I open my eyes to look at him.
“Surprising.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Surprising?”
I blush a little. “I mean, I knew it was coming but it still surprised me.” Eli smirks.
“Next time I’ll give you full warning.”
“That would be nice.”
Eli smiles this genuinely sweet smile. “Consider yourself warned,” he says. I smile back.
“Okay,” I reply quietly. Then Eli leans in, capturing my lips with his. I sigh through my nose, wrapping my arms around his neck. His lips are so soft and warm. I never want this to end.
Eli slowly pulls back, smiling shyly. “Would it be too disrespectful if I asked to come in?”
I grin at him. “Yeah. But it wouldn’t be at all disrespectful if I invited you in.” A bright smile comes over his face.
“Really? But doesn’t that imply the third date rule?”
I shake my head. “Not necessarily. You could come in and we could just have coffee or some other sort of beverage and talk. Just talk, nothing more. That doesn’t imply the third date rule, does it?”
“I guess not.” There’s a beat of silence. “Are you going to invite me in?” Eli asks.
I smile. “I thought I already did. If not, would you like to come in for a coffee or something?” Eli smiles.
“I would be delighted.” He inclines his head just slightly. I shake my head in amusement and unlock my door.
That was the best third date ever.
-END FLASHBACK-
I’m brought back to the present by a nurse calling my name and Eli touching my shoulder. I take a deep breath and stand. I’m nervous. I hope my baby’s alright.
