CHAPTER TWO
Taylor’s POV
Zac exit’s the bathroom and looks at me.
“How’d you get in? I thought the door was locked,” he asks quietly.
“Hello, retard, we both have keys,” I answer teasingly.
“Oh. Right.” Zac looks down at his sneakers.
“Zac…” I trail off. He looks at me. I worry my bottom lip with my teeth. He looks back to the floor.
“Taylor, I…” There’s a pause. I’m afraid he won’t continue.
“What, Zac?” I ask gently.
“I, I, I’m sorry about earlier.” Zac lifts his head and there are tears in his eyes. “I’m just, I’m so stressed.”
“We all are, Zac,” I tell him, not at all happy with his explanation.
My brother shakes his head.
“It’s not just the CD,” he tells me. “There’s more I’m dealing with. And I didn’t mean to, but I took it out on you.” At this point the tears start to fall making my heart ache. “I, I’m sorry. I don’t really want you to go away.” He’s practically sobbing. I take three long strides, holding my arms out to him.
Zac all but throws himself at me, burying his face in the crook of my neck. His arms hold on to me tightly. I stroke his hair, trying to soothe him.
“Shh. It’s okay,” I murmur. “I’m not mad at you anymore. It’s okay. Shh.” Then I lead him over to my bed. I sit and pull my younger brother into my lap. He straddles my thighs, still clinging to me.
It hurts so much to see him like this. What else is he dealing with? Why hasn’t he told me about it? We’re supposed to be close.
“Don’t hate me,” Zac whispers. I laugh lightly.
“Oh, Zac, I could never hate you,” I tell him. Zac pulls back to look at me. He shakes his head.
“No, Tay, I want you to promise me,” he says. “Promise me. No matter what happens, promise you won’t hate me.” His brown eyes are pleading.
“I promise, Zac, I promise,” I tell him truthfully. Then I pull him back to my chest. He sighs deeply. I chew on my lip. What was that all about? If he knew how much I love him, he’d know that there’s nothing he could ever do to make me hate him. Nothing.
Soon, Zac falls asleep. I lay him gently on my bed. When I pull away, his strong arms reach out for me. I tuck a pillow against him that he immediately clings to. I smooth his hair back and kiss his temple. Then I grab my cell phone from the bedside table and head for the bathroom.
I lock the bathroom door after shutting it. Then I pull back the shower curtain and sink into the claw foot tub. Thankfully it’s dry. I flip open my cell phone and hit the speed dial. Then I wait.
