CHAPTER THREE
JD’s POV
My cell phone rings. My roommate, and best friend, Andy looks at me. She raises an eyebrow. I shrug and pick up my phone. The caller ID tells me it’s Taylor Hanson.
“It’s Taylor,” I say before answering. Andy goes back to her beadwork. “Hi, Tay,” I greet my friend.
“Hi, J,” Taylor replies quietly. I frown. He’s using that voice that tells me something’s wrong.
“Did you and Zac get into another fight?” I ask.
“What do you think?” Taylor counters. I go and seat myself in the dark blue recliner. I pop the foot rest up and lean back in the chair.
“Tell me what happened,” I command gently. Taylor takes a deep breath and begins.
I listen quietly, without interruption. Then Taylor sighs and says,
“I just don’t know what to do. It’s getting harder and harder to hold my feelings back.”
“You need to tell him, Taylor,” I advise my friend.
“You and I both know I can’t do that,” Taylor replies.
“You wanna bet?” I retort. “What do ya got to lose?”
“Everything,” he murmurs. “I wouldn’t be able to live if Zac hated me and/or was disgusted. My heart would be broken so badly, it could never be repaired.”
“God, you’re such a drama queen!”
“Am not.” From his voice I know he’s pouting.
“Listen to me, Taylor, and listen closely. I know you. And I know that not telling Zac how you feel is breaking your heart. Don’t you see that too?” In response, there’s silence on the other end. Then Taylor sniffles.
“You’re right,” he whispers softly. “Either way my heart’s still broken.”
“See, T-Bird. You’ve got nothing left to lose,” I reply.
“Maybe, but I still don’t think I could go through with it.” His voice is somber and quiet. I feel so bad for him. Paul may be my boyfriend, but Taylor is my “Gay Boyfriend.” I’m as close to him as I am to Paul and Andy combined.
I sigh.
“Tay, my advice will always be that you should tell Zac. You know getting things off your chest helps.”
“Yeah, I know,” he responds. “I’ll think about it.”
“Good.”
“So what are you up to?” Taylor asks.
“Before I was so rudely interrupted,” I tease, “I was doing what pays the bills.”
“Ah, I see. I interrupted jewelry making.” I nod to myself.
“Yup.” We chat some more before hanging up.
I go back over to the table where Andy has started on a new pair of earrings. Without looking up she asks,
“So what happened this time?” I sigh and launch into the story.
Andy’s POV
JD hangs up with Taylor and comes back over to the table, sitting across from me. Keeping my eyes glued to the task at hand, I ask,
“So what happened this time?” My roommate sighs and begins to explain. When she’s finished, I lift my head to look at her.
“Think I’ll get a call from Zac?” I ask. JD nods.
“Prolly.” I nod too.
“Did you ever tell Taylor that I know his secret?” I ask. JD shakes her head.
“No way. He would freak. It wouldn’t even matter that his feelings for Zac don’t gross you out,” she explains. I laugh lightly.
“It doesn’t gross me out ‘cause of all those stories I’ve read on LiveJournal and the like. Besides,” I shrug, “having Zac tell me about his feelings first kind of prepared me. Ya know?” JD nods.
We’re both silent for a moment. Then my gaze goes back to my roommate.
“Guess we’ll just have to take matters into our own hands when we fly out next week for Paul and Alec’s show,” I say. Our boyfriends are in a local band and they’re touring this summer.
JD nods.
“It looks that way. Give me a day or two to come up with something,” she replies. I grin. JD always comes up with the greatest plans. I can’t wait to hear the details of this one.
