all_unwritten’s prompt #92: her hair fell over her eyes.
Summary: Not your typical boy-meets-girl.
Prologue:
Her hair falls over her eyes, hiding the brightest blue I have ever seen. Hiding the salty tears that I forced from those blue eyes. I just really want to hug her. But I don’t. Instead I brush her hair back from her face. She looks up at me; so innocent, so shy.
"Thank you," she whispers.
I smile sadly. "It’s what Kate would have wanted," I tell her. She nods in response.
Just then her phone chirps. She smiles apologetically, turning the alarm off. "I’m sorry, but I have to get going," she tells me.
My heart sinks to my gut.
"Oh, well, um, maybe we should do this again some time?" I ask.
She smiles as she slides on her coat. "Yeah, that would be nice. I’d like to hear more about Kate," she says. I can only nod. I want to say more, but she’s already on her way out of the coffee shop.
I run after the pretty blond, catching up to her at the corner. "Julie, wait!" She turns around to look at me, the wind whipping her long blond locks across her face.
"Yeah?" she asks as I step up to her.
"I just… I needed to… Fuck it." I take her face gently in my hands and place my lips against hers. I only hold them there for a few seconds before pulling away.
"I don-don’t understand," she says, clearly in shock.
"I don’t either," I tell her honestly. "All I know is that I haven’t laughed or smiled or been this happy since Kate died and it’s because of you. You’ve made me laugh and smile and be genuinely happy for the first time in so long. I just… I’ve fallen for you."
By the end of my speech Julie’s head is down, her hair hiding her eyes. I say her name quietly. She lifts her head, shaking her hair back from her face. Those blue eyes of hers sparkle with unshed tears.
Our gazes connect, blue to brown, and there’s that feeling again of just wanting to wrap her up in my arms. The wind whips her hair into her face again. When she pushes it back I notice those previously unshed tears have finally made their way down her cheeks.
Slowly, Julie steps closer, wrapping her arms around my neck. Looking up at me she whispers, "This heart still beats for you." Then she molds her mouth to mine in the sweetest kiss I’ve ever had.
