CHAPTER TWO
I set Penny down on one of the couches in the back of the bus. We stare at each other blankly, neither of us knowing what to do. Then the little girl’s face scrunches up like she’s going to cry. So I do the first thing that pops in my head.
“Baby, baby, baby I cry in the night, night, night I never know why.”
Penny looks intrigued by the song.
“More?” she asks. I smile at her and she smiles back. Then I begin to dance and sing, able to hear the guitars, bass and drums in my head and the sound of Alanna’s voice.
“I’ve been waiting for so long, been waiting for so long. For an opportunity to explain myself once and for all. Examined my actions that set these spinning wheels in motion. Now I present undying devotion to what I hold now in my hands.”
As I start for the chorus, Penny gets up and starts jumping up and down on the couch, dancing.
“Baby, baby, baby I cry in the night, night, night I never know why. You’re searching for those secrets why I hide myself from you.”
Penny jumps from the couch and into my arms. She giggles and squeals and claps as I dance her around the small room.
“Baby, baby, baby you cry in the night, night, night you’re swearing good-bye. Winter comes and goes and freezes over all we know.”
Penny and I dance around the bus as I sing the song. I set Penny on the floor and she jumps up and down excitedly.
“I’ve been waiting for so long, been waiting for so long. Just to save you from that last breath when he kept you from hanging on. Keep your fingers crossed you’ve lost a voice now won’t you sing. Keep your fingers on the pulse his rhythm slowly fades.”
Penny seems to be having a great time. And I must confess I’m having fun entertaining the little one.
“Baby, baby, baby I cry in the night, night, night I never know why. You’re searching for those secrets why I hide myself from you. Baby, baby, baby you cry in the night, night, night you’re swearing good-bye. Winter comes and goes and freezes over all we know.
“Afraid of what we know… Left behind, you were the first to find it. Left it behind. You couldn’t help but turn away a mask that hides a face. And the saddest eyes I have killed to save!”
Penny and I dance around and jump a lot during the chorus. Penny just can’t seem to stop giggling. We’re having so much fun, even though there’s no actual music playing.
“Baby, baby, baby I cry in the night, night, night I never know why. You’re searching for those secrets why I hide myself from you. Baby, baby, baby you cry in the night, night, night you’re swearing good-bye. Winter comes and goes and freezes over all we know.
“Baby, baby, baby you cry in the night, night, night you’re swearing good-bye. Girl, you better watch your back, he sleeps with wolves among lilacs.”
When we finish our song, we hear clapping from the doorway. I spin around, startled, to find Taylor Hanson.
“Dada!” Penny exclaims. Taylor grins, bending down to pick up his little girl.
“Hey, Sweetie! Having fun?” Penny nods.
“Fun, fun, fun!” she replies. Taylor smiles and then turns to me.
“Thank you,” he says. I give him a nod.
“No problem.” Then Penny reaches out for me. Taylor seems hesitant, but hands his daughter over. She once again goes straight for my necklace.
Taylor sits on the couch and motions for me to join him. I smile, taking a seat with Penny in my lap.
“So, can I ask you something?” I say to the blond singer. He nods.
“Sure.”
“Um, okay,” I begin. “I’m not sure how to put this but… How the hell did you lose your child?” Taylor shakes his head, chuckling a little.
“The Terrible Two’s have already begun and she’s turned into a little escape artist,” he explains. “This is the second time this week we’ve lost her.” I shake my head.
“Jeez.” There’s a beat of silence, then I say, “Where’s her mom?”
Taylor looks down at his lap, picking at his jeans.
“We’re divorced. Have been for a while.” He shrugs.
“Oh god, Tay. I’m sorry.” I bite my lip, feeling awkward.
“It’s okay,” he tells me. “Really.” I nod. I open my mouth and close it. But then I open it again asking,
“This is probably too personal but, what about River?” Taylor blinks. From the look on his face I don’t think he’s going to answer the question. But then he surprises me.
“A few weeks after we broke up, Natalie found out she was pregnant,” the blond says. “It’s just me an’ the kids now.” All I can do is nod.
At that moment Zac walks in, mid shirt-change. He gives me a curious look.
“Who are you?” he asks. Taylor grins.
“Yeah, who are you? I never got your name,” he says. I grin.
“Well, if you really want to know, it’s Liza,” I tell them. Zac pulls his clean shirt on and says,
“Like Liza Minnelli?” I smirk.
“Only a gay man could come up with that.” Taylor snorts.
“Heeeey,” Zac whines. I giggle. Then he pouts and announces he’s going to meet the fans. Taylor and I share a look with raised eyebrows and laugh.
After a moment we quiet and Taylor smiles fondly. Penny’s sitting quietly in my lap with her head on my shoulder and her thumb in her mouth. I stroke her hair lightly and snuggle her closer.
“I can’t believe she’s getting along so well with you,” Taylor says. I quirk an eyebrow at him. “She’s a hard one to win over,” he explains. “You must be pretty special.” Trying to distract the blond from the obvious blush showing on my cheeks, I reply,
“Naw, it’s just experience. My three friends have a combined number of five kids all under the age of ten.” Taylor’s eyes widen and I just nod.
