CHAPTER ELEVEN
River and I are sat on the floor of the dressing room, River chewing on a random toy. Taylor's stationed at a desk looking over some work-related notes. And Isaac and Zac took Ezra and Penny to explore the venue.
"Taylor, we need to talk," I say, my voice steady even though my insides feel like Jell-o.
The blue-eyed singer slowly turns around to look at me.
"That doesn't sound promising." He leans back in his chair and folds his arms across his chest.
"Well, we are in Boston," I reply. Taylor wrinkles his brow.
"And by that you mean...?" I lick over my lips.
"It's just, you know, people live in Boston." It's obvious Taylor is still confused.
"People?" he asks.
"People of a bass-playing nature," I reply slowly.
"Of a bass-playing... Ohhh." Taylor nods. "Aaron." I nod also.
"Right. Aaron."
The blond slides off his chair on to the floor, sitting next to me.
"Are you worried he's going to show up?" I look down at the little boy sat between my legs.
"I'm pretty sure he'll be here," I say. I look at Taylor then and he raises an eyebrow. "I put Alanna V +4 on the guest list," I explain. Taylor nods slowly.
"Okay." He doesn't say anything else, just strokes his baby's hair.
"Are you mad?" I ask. He shakes his head no. I bite my lip, worried that he's not being honest. "Tay..." He lifts his gaze to mine and I have to look away. His eyes are so sad.
"I'm sorry," I whisper. Then I look at the older man, but he's looking at River. "I put them on the list before any of this happened. Or at least, I had already promised I would." Taylor just nods, making my shoulders slump in defeat. "I'm sorry," I whisper again. And then there's silence.
I chew on my lip, the cogs of my brain clicking and whirring.
"Why won't you say something damnit?!" I exclaim when the silence becomes too much. Taylor looks at me in surprise. "Sorry," I mutter, my shoulders slumping again and my gaze turning to the baby blanket we're seated on.
Then I feel Taylor nuzzling my hair with his nose. I sigh, lifting my head so our foreheads touch.
"I'm sorry," I whisper for the fourth, and hopefully final, time.
"Stop," Taylor says quietly, brushing my hair back from my face. "You don't need to keep saying that." He sighs then. "Besides, if you're going to be friends with him, I've got to get used to it sooner or later. Right?" I look into his blue eyes and smile softly.
"That's right, Mister." Taylor finally cracks a smile, making an amused sound.
"Aw, that's the Taylor I know and love," I tease.
Taylor looks at me with a serious expression. As he continues to stare silently, I realize what I've said.
"I um, hmm. I didn't mean... I..." Taylor smirks. "I didn't mean it like that."
"Suuuuuure," he says, making me blush.
"Tay-lor!" I whine helplessly. He laughs, giving me a hug.
"Okay, okay," he says. "I'll stop."
"Thanks," I mumble, leaning into him. He kisses my hair.
"Wanna help me find my kids?"
