CHAPTER TWELVE
I wait nervously by the front entrance of the building. Alanna just called saying they'd be there any minute. Chuck and Sal couldn't make it tonight. It was just going to be Alanna, Aaron, and Ryan Murphy. I check my cell phone for the time. It's only been sixty seconds since the last time I checked it. And only three minutes since Alanna had called. God, was I freaking out. I was so excited to see them. Yet, so anxious about being in Aaron's prensence again. Especially with Taylor nearby.
Finally after another three minutes I can hear Alanna's boisterous laughter floating through the door. I move closer to the entrance, so I can greet them as soon as they appear. When they do, I hug the three tightly, then lead them to the dressing room.
When we make it to the large room backstage, Alanna goes around hugging each Hanson in sight. Penny jumps up, squealing delight at the raven-haired singer.
"Nonna!" she shouts reaching towards my friend.
"Penny!" Alanna exclaims as she scoops the toddler up. "Hey, love, how are you?"
"Nonna sing?" Penny asks. Alanna chuckles.
"Sure, Sweetie, we'll sing later," she answers. I can't help smiling at the sweet interaction. Alanna has no maternal instinct what-so-ever, yet she's amazing with Penny.
Just then, the sound guy enters the room.
"Hey, guys. We need to do a quick sound check. Just a song or two," he announces. The Hanson brothers nod.
"Who wants to go to sound check?" Zac asks.
"I doooo!" Ezra exclaims, jumping up and down. Zac laughs.
"Okay, buddy. Lets go!" he says. Then he swings the little boy up on to his shoulders and heads for the door.
Taylor comes over to me, handing me the youngest family member.
"Are you coming too?" he asks. I look around to find we're alone. Wow, these guys move quick.
"I guess if everyone else is going..." I say with a smile. Taylor smiles back. Then he takes my hand and leads me away.
Alanna, Ezra, and Penny dance during the sound check. I see Aaron watching them. He's got a smile on his face. It's nice to see him smiling after the last encounter we had. Then he looks my way, catching me staring. I feel myself blush.
The bass player ambles towards me, stopping at my side. He wiggles a finger at River in greeting. The baby's eyes widen, his lips forming a little "O" as he reaches for the flashy ring on Aaron's pinkie. The twenty-three-year-old smiles, letting the little boy grab on to his hand. But then he makes a face as River decides Aaron's finger would make a good chew toy. I can't help snorting, Aaron wiping the slobber off on his black jeans.
My cell phone goes off then, vibrating against my hip. I unclip it from my belt and check the screen. It's time for River's bottle. And by the smell of it, a new diaper. I catch Taylor's eye and point to his son, then wave my hand in front of my nose. He smiles, giving me a thumbs-up. I ask Alanna to watch the older kids for a bit, receiving a thumbs-up from her too. Then I head in the direction of backstage.
I can hear footsteps slapping against the shiny floor behind me. I don't pay any attention as I continue down the hall towards the dressing room.
"Liza! Wait up!" I turn to see Aaron hurrying in our direction. I smile when he catches up, continuing are journey silently.
Once in the dressing room, I get out River's diaper bag and changing mat. I unfold the vinyl mat and lay the baby down, making faces at him. As I change his diaper, I can feel Aaron's eyes on me, watching me work. I see him smile from the corner of my eye.
"You really are in this for the kids," he says.
I button River's pants, nodding.
"Of course I am. I love taking care of kids," I tell him. Then I hand him the baby so I can make up a bottle. As I do so, I say, "In high school almost all of my elective classes were some form of early childhood education or child care." I grin at my dark-haired friend. "Had an A-average in all those classes too." Aaron smiles.
"So you're not only pretty, you're smart too." My face heats up a little, compliments are hard for me to hear.
I busy myself with picking up River and bringing him over to the couch. I cradle him in my arms, offering him the bottle of formula, which he greedily accepts. Then Aaron takes a seat beside us.
"I'm sorry about what I said the other day," he says quietly. "You know, about the money and sleeping with Taylor and what-not. It was mean. I shouldn't have said any of it."
"You were upset," I reply, as if it explains away all the hurtful words he said to me.
Aaron shakes his head.
"No, it wasn't right. Don't just dismiss my apology," he says. I sigh.
"Okay, fine. I won't. But..." I bite my lip as I let my sentence hang unfinished.
"But what?" Aaron asks. I shake my head.
"Nothing."
"No. What is it?" he asks again. I chew my lower lip for a moment.
"It's just... I get the whole 'pissed-off-cause-the-girl-I-like-likes-someone-else' thing. But you seemed a lot angrier than that." I shrug and look back down at River.
Aaron rubs the back of his neck. He takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly.
"Thing is, I'd been waiting a year and a half to get to the point of earning a kiss from you. It just made my blood boil knowing it only took Taylor a day. Not even a day," he explains. "And then to see the two of you parenting River together... It was just hard to take." He shrugs.
"I'm not parenting," I tell him. "I'm nanny-ing. I'm a nanny not a parent, as I was so pleasantly reminded this morning." I sort of mumble the last part of my sentence.
Aaron raises a questioning eyebrow. I heave a sigh.
"Penny called me 'Mama' this morning and Taylor apologized. He freaking apologized!" I exclaim. Aaron frowns.
"I take it, that offends you," he says. I nod.
"Yeah."
"Did you tell him that?" Aaron asks. I shake my head. "Maybe you should." I look at him in disbelief.
"What good would that do?" Aaron shrugs.
"I don't know. But it might make you feel better." I frown saying,
"I don't like it when you're right."
