CHAPTER FOURTEEN
March 14th, 2007
Today is Taylor's twenty-fourth birthday and the brothers have been so busy --preparing for the night's show, doing numerous phone interviews, and general, random paperwork of 3CG Records-- I don't know if anyone has stopped to wish Taylor a happy birthday.
But right now they're finishing up one of their last songs. The kids and I are waiting at the side of the stage for the big surprise. When the song ends and the fans cheer, Isaac puts his guitar down and Zac comes out from behind his drum kit.
"As you all know, today is Taylor's twenty-fourth birthday," Zac begins, clapping a hand to his older brother's shoulder. Taylor smiles shyly and I know that if his cheeks weren't already rosy from performing, they'd be turning a bright shade of red right now.
"So in honor of this special occasion, we have a little surprise for you," Isaac finishes as Zac comes over to me.
The candles on the cake are lit and as everyone in the arena begins to sing "Happy Birthday," Zac, the kids and I wheel out the huge sheet-cake. Taylor's grinning widely, picking up Ezra when the little boy runs over to him. I stand beside the birthday boy with a child on each hip, smiling and singing along. When the song's over, Taylor takes a deep breath and blows out all twenty-four candles in one go. We all clap and cheer, the fans going wild.
At that moment, Zac scoops a large amount of frosting up with his fingers and smears it over his older brother's face. The crowd laughs and quite a few people encourage Taylor to get revenge. Very slowly, Taylor sets his oldest son down on the stage. Then he takes a handful of cake, preparing to get back at Zac. But at the last second, Taylor whips around, shoving the cake in MY face.
I stand unmoving and in shock. But when Taylor gives me those damn puppy-dog eyes, it snaps me back into reality. I grin at him, handing the kids over to their uncles, who slowly back away. I grab Taylor by the wrist and a handful of cake simultaneously. He struggles to break my grip, but I just grin evilly, keeping a tight hold on him. After all, I'm a nanny who wrangles three small children on a daily basis, I know how to hold on to people.
Taylor gives me one last pleading look before I smoosh the birthday cake in his face. I giggle madly as he wipes frosting out of his eyes. I'm so preoccupied with my laughter that I almost don't notice the singer loading up on cake. When he starts to advance I shriek loudly and run. The crowd cheers Taylor on as he chases me behind the drums, around the piano, and from one side of the stage to the other.
Finally the blue-eyed birthday boy catches up to me, grabbing me around the waist. I squeal loudly, much in the way Penny does when being tickled, Taylor spinning me around to face him. He looks at me, his grin turning into a soft smile. Then he leans in close. My heart thumps hard against my ribcage, my mouth going dry.
What the hell is he doing?! He can't kiss me on stage!
But before I know what's happening, his face is replaced by a fist full of cake.
Recovering from the shock, I grab Taylor by the shirt and wipe my face off with it. Taylor laughs and hugs me tightly.
"Happy Birthday, Tay," I tell him. He gives me a squeeze before pulling back.
"Sing a song with me?" he asks.
