CHAPTER TEN
Bella called Tommy and told him to come home. Then she went to lay down in his room. She must have fallen asleep because the next thing she knew Tommy was there, curled around her, nuzzling her neck. She smiled sleepily and reached up to run her fingers through Tommy’s hair. “Hey you,” she said quietly. “When did you get here?”
Tommy smiled against her neck and answered, “Don’t worry, it hasn’t been as long as yesterday.”
Bella chuckled. “Well thank god for that.” She paused a moment, just running her fingers through Tommy’s hair which made the man nuzzle deeper in to her neck, purring. “How was your visit with your mom? Is she doing okay? Is the upcoming holiday upsetting her?”
Tommy sighed and moved his head on to Bella’s chest and she kept combing her fingers through his hair. “The visit was nice mostly. But, yeah, she’s starting to get a bit sad. Can’t really blame her though.”
Bella shook her head in agreement. “No, you really can’t. She lost her husband and this is her first Christmas without him.” There’s a beat of silence. “And your first Christmas without your dad. How are you doin, baby?”
Tommy sighed again and curled his arms around Bella. “I don’t know,” he answered quietly. “I’m definitely sad. But this,” he ran his hand over Bella’s belly, “is helping. I’m conflicted, you know? Like, I’m sad because this will be my first Christmas ever without my dad. But I’m happy because we’re going to have twins. I kinda feel bad for being happy, kind of guilty. Ya know?” He looked up at Bella.
Bella nodded. “Yeah, I get it. But I bet your mom, and your dad, are happy for us. They’re happy that we get to be happy. I’m sure your mother doesn’t want you to be sad.”
“No, she doesn’t. She hates seeing her kids upset, but we hate it more to see her like that. He was her true love,” Tommy explained. “I just hope that you and I will have a lot longer than she did before we have to have that feeling of loss.”
“Well, I hope that when we’re old and gray and it’s our time to go, that we do it together. I don’t think I could live if you died before me,” Bella told him quietly.
Tommy lifted himself up on his elbow to look at Bella. He stroked her cheek lightly. “Lets not worry about that now,” he said.
Bella nodded with a smile. “Okay, well, I need to talk to you about the whole Adam/baby thing and which of us is moving. Is that cool? Are you up for it right now?”
Tommy nodded. “Yeah, it’ll get my mind off the sad parts of the season.” He turned on to his belly, holding himself up on his elbows, staring at Bella. “So, did you talk with Dave?”
“Yeah, I did,” Bella answered. “His thought was that, for now, telling Adam or not should be up to me because as long as we don’t know who the father is, these babies are mine alone.” Her words made Tommy frown. “Hey now. Don’t look like that.”
“But, they’re our babies,” Tommy stated.
“Actually, Tommy, we don’t know who the father is,” Bella disagreed. “It could be all you, all Adam or one of each. Basically, you need to trust me right now. Trust that I know what’s best for right now.”
Tommy nodded even though he didn’t really like what she was thinking. He wanted to help make the decisions, he wanted to be the daddy. As far as he was concerned, he was the daddy no matter what that test said. He was going to be there for Bella every step of the way. Through the pregnancy up until the twins left the house for college and then when they moved out on their own permanently all the way up till they got grandkids from them.
Tommy sighed. “I do trust you, babe,” he told her. “But I just… it’s hard, ya know? I want to be the only father and be the one helping with decisions. I don’t want you to have to make them on your own.”
“Tommy,” Bella sighed. “I’m a big girl now and if I had to, I could raise these two on my own. But I’m pretty damn lucky and so are these twins and you want to know why?”
“Why?”
“Because no matter if you’re the father of both, one or neither, you’re going to be an amazing dad to these two, I just know it.”
Tommy raised an eyebrow. “Even if I’m not the father of either of them I’ll be a good dad?” he asked confused.
Bella nodded. “Babe, if for some horrible reason you’re not at all the biological father of these babies, you’re going to be the step-father. And you’re going to be amazing. You’re going to love them like they’re your own. I know this,” she said. “And you’ve said so yourself. But if one or both of these babies are Adam’s… Well, I want him to step up to the plate. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want you in the picture. I want the three of us to parent these babies together.”
“And what if I’m the only father?” Tommy asked. “What then?”
Bella smiled softly. “You’ll still be an amazing father and we won’t even need to tell Adam that there was a chance he could have been the father.”
“What?”
Bella sighed. “I’ve got an appointment to check for birth defects,” she explained. “And what they do is take DNA from the babies. They’re also going to do a paternity test because they’ll already have the DNA. What I’ve decided is that I’m going to wait for the DNA results to decide whether or not I’m going to tell Adam.”
“So, if he’s not the father you’re not going to tell him anything?” Tommy asked. Bella nodded. “When’s this appointment?”
“In eight weeks,” Bella answered. Tommy groaned and dropped his face in to a pillow. Bella petted his hair. “I know,” she said. “Eight weeks sounds like forever. But it’ll go by fast. Promise.”
Tommy sighed and lifted his head. “Okay, the paternity-slash-telling-Adam problem has been decided. What were you thinking about who’s going to move?”
Bella grinned. “I haven’t thought anything,” she said. “I’ve decided what we’re going to do about that.”
“Without my input?” Tommy replied a bit miffed.
Bella nodded. “Don’t worry. I think you’re going to love it.” Tommy just gave her a skeptical look. “I’ve decided that since Dr. House wants to see me every four weeks and I have that procedure in eight weeks, that it’ll just be easier if I stay here until the babies are born. Then the two of us will decide together where we’re going to live after that. Does that sound good to you?”
Tommy grinned and leaned up to kiss Bella. “That sounds awesome!” he told her excitedly. “I mean, I know I said I’d go east for you, but I’m happy we can stay here.” Bella smiled. She loved the ear to ear grin that was on Tommy’s face. It warmed her heart.
She tugged on his shirt and he crawled up the bed until they were face to face. Then Bella took Tommy’s face in her hands and brought his lips to hers, kissing him softly. “I love you,” she murmured against his mouth.
“I love you more,” he replied.
“I love you most,” Bella giggled.
Tommy could only shake his head, a grin upon his face. “You’re a dork, you know that?” Bella stuck out her tongue. Tommy leaned in and captured it with his lips, sucking gently. Bella moaned and Tommy’s tongue slipped in to her mouth. They kissed softly, tongues working, dancing, rubbing, loving.
When Tommy pulled back, he nuzzled Bella’s cheek lovingly. Then he moved down her body and pushed her shirt up over her belly. He pulled the waist band of her maternity pants down so it was bunched under her stomach. Then he kissed the soft skin on one side and then the other. “I love you, babies,” he murmured quietly. He stroked the round tummy with his guitar-calloused fingertips making tears spring to Bella’s eyes. His sweet attitude towards these unborn babies made her heart swell with joy to the point of over-flowing. There was no doubt in her mind that this was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.
