CHAPTER EIGHT
The first time Tommy Joe had walked in to Adam Lambert’s house was the day he was moving in. He had gawked from the outside at how big it was and his jaw had dropped to the floor when he’d finally entered the building. Compared to anything Tommy had ever lived in, this place was a mansion!
The first floor had a library and an office on the opposite side of the hall. There was a guest room fit for a king with a bathroom of its own. Also, across the hall from the guest room, was a half bath. Rounding off the first floor was a chef’s kitchen with an eating area that opened up to the living room. And the basement… Tommy could have died when he saw that more than half of it was dedicated to a fully soundproofed recording studio.
The second floor of the house was accessible by two different staircases. One for the two guest rooms and guest bath, the other a private entry to the other end of the hall where the master suite was. The master suite was big enough for a king-size bed and a reading nook. There were two very large walk-in closets on either side of the bathroom door. And the bathroom was unlike anything he’d ever seen. It had an extra large soaker tub that could fit both Tommy Joe and Adam and still have room to breathe. The shower was so big that there wasn’t need for a door, two showerhead's and a bench along one wall. The whole shower stall was made of the prettiest stone tiles Tommy had ever seen. They were large gray and white squares that probably had cost a fortune. There was, of course, double sinks with beautiful slab granite counters that matched the colors of the tile in the shower.
After Tommy Joe had gotten the two cent tour, as Adam had called it, he turned to Adam in awe. “I didn’t think feds got paid that much,” he said. “How the hell do you afford this place?”
Adam blushed. “My dad had it built for me. It was kind of a college graduation present.” He shrugged.
“Holy shit. What does your dad do for a living?” Tommy asked.
Adam rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “He um, well, he owns a record company.”
Tommy’s eyes bugged out of his head. “What?!” he exclaimed. “Why don’t you just have him sign you and make a record? Why go through all the trouble of trying to make it on your own?”
Adam shook his head. “Although I would love to belong to my dad’s label because he gives so much creative freedom to his artists, I just… it would feel wrong,” he explained. “Everyone would think I got to make a record just because my dad owned the company and not because I’m any good at singing. I want people to know I can do it on my own.”
Tommy Joe nodded in understanding. It made sense to him. “You don’t want to be that guy with a silver spoon stuck in his mouth.” Adam nodded.
But that had been months ago and Tommy Joe’s things had barely filled a corner of the gigantic basement, even with most of it sectioned off for the studio. Now it was winter, a true New England snow storm going on outside while Tommy Joe and Adam were curled up on the couch together, a fire blazing in the fireplace.
Adam had been jumpy and a bit nervous all day. For the life of him, Tommy Joe couldn’t figure out why. Besides the nervousness, Adam also seemed to space out at times. Like right now, they were watching a movie on the beautiful, high def flat screen and even though Tommy Joe was half sprawled across Adam’s lap, his head against the younger man's chest so he couldn’t see Adam’s face, Tommy had a feeling he wasn’t paying attention. Tommy Joe knew his feeling was dead on when he suggested that they call Rebecca up later, tie her up and have their way with her and all Adam said was, “Sure, babe, anything you want.”
Tommy’s eyes went wide and he sat up and moved to sit in Adam’s lap. Adam’s hands immediately went to Tommy Joe’s hips, rubbing soothing circles in to the bones with his thumbs. “Adam,” Tommy said.
“Hmm?” Adam replied, his eyes finally focusing on his boyfriend.
“What’s up with you today?” Tommy asked, a frown of concern on his face.
“What do you mean?” Adam questioned.
“What I mean is that you’ve seemed nervous and spacey all day,” Tommy Joe explained. “Like just now, I suggested we tie Rebecca up later and do naughty things to her and all you said was, Sure, babe, anything you want.”
Adam’s eyes widened. “Seriously?” Tommy Joe nodded. Adam sighed and scrubbed his face with his hands. “I’m sorry,” he said quietly.
Tommy rubbed Adam’s chest soothingly with both hands. “Don’t be sorry, baby boy, just tell me what’s going on. What’s bothering you?”
Adam chewed his lip nervously and let his eyes wander around the room but never let them connect with Tommy’s gaze. “It’s just…” He sighed. “I’ve been thinking about some stuff and I just… it makes me nervous.” He shrugged and looked down at his hands, picking at his nail polish, which he could never wear when he was a Marshall.
“Baby, talk to me,” Tommy encouraged gently. “Is this about your music career? Are you getting nervous about that gig you have coming up?”
Adam shook his head. “No, it’s not that…”
“Then what is it?”
Adam sighed and ran his hands through his shaggy hair. “I’ve been thinking about us, to be honest.”
“Us?” Tommy asked, his stomach knotting up. Why was Adam nervous when he was thinking about them? “Are you… are you not happy with our arrangement?”
Adam’s blue eyes went wide as saucers. “No! That’s not it at all!” he exclaimed. “I love what we have, I love you, but sometimes….” He trailed off letting his sentence just hang.
“Sometimes what?” Tommy asked. He was starting to feel nauseous.
“I sometimes wish there was… more." Adam shrugged.
“More? How can there be more? I mean, I live with you, Adam. I help with the housework when I’m not working. I cook meals whenever I can and I share a bed with you,” Tommy rambled. “How can there be more?”
Adam reached up with one hand to gently stroke Tommy Joe’s cheek. With his other hand he reached in to his pocket and pulled out a little velvet box. Tommy’s eyes bugged out of his head and he looked back and forth between Adam’s sparkling blue eyes and the small velvet box. “That’s not… that’s not what I think it is, is it?” he stammered.
Adam just smiled lovingly and opened the box, revealing a beautiful white-gold engagement band that had knots intricately carved in to it. “I love you, Tommy Joe,” he stated. “I have since the very beginning and we both know that I’d take a bullet, or two, or three for you. What we have is so special. Something I’ve never felt before and I want to keep that feeling. I want to keep you all to myself. I love you, Tommy Joe, and that’s never going to change. Will you do me the honor of becoming my lawfully wedded husband?”
Tommy chewed his lip, his eyes wet with tears. “I… I don’t know,” he whispered. “Is it… is it legal here?”
Adam nodded. “For almost a year now.”
A wide grin split Tommy’s face. “You mean we can, like, have a real ceremony and a real marriage license and not just some stupid civil union crap?” he asked.
Adam couldn’t help the chuckle that passed his lips. “Yeah, baby, a real honest to goodness marriage with a license and everything.”
“Like, we’ll actually be recognized as husbands?”
“Yes, Tommy!” Adam laughed. “We may not be legal in every state, but we will be here.”
“I don’t care about all the other states,” Tommy told him. “I only care about here. This is my home now.” He paused, looking down at the ring Adam was still holding. “So um, are you going to put that on me?” he asked.
Adam smirked. “It depends, are you saying yes?”
Tommy threw his head back and laughed. “Yes! Yes! Yes!” he exclaimed. “Of course I’m saying yes! Now put that damn ring on my finger!”
Adam snorted at Tommy’s enthusiasm, slipping the band on to Tommy’s left ring finger. “If I’d known you were going to react so pleasantly I would have done this sooner and, ya know, not have been so nervous.” He chuckled lightly.
Tommy stared down at the ring for a moment in complete awe of what had just happened. But then reality hit him like a brick wall. He was still in WITSEC which meant that his own family wouldn’t be able to see him get married, wouldn’t be able to celebrate the best day of his life with him. His eyes stung with tears that slowly dripped down his cheeks as he continued looking at his ring. He didn’t dare look up at Adam right now.
“Babe?” Adam asked when he noticed the tears and how quiet Tommy had gone. “Babe, what’s wrong?” He hooked a finger under his fiancé’s chin and tilted it up until he could see Tommy’s face. But Tommy kept his eyes downcast and away from Adam’s gaze. “Babe, talk to me,” Adam commanded gently. “Please, I just… did I do something?”
Tommy shook his head. “No, Adam, you didn’t do anything. I just…” He heaved a sigh. “I’m just... jealous of you."
“What do you have to be jealous of me for?” Adam asked.
“We’re getting married and your family gets to be there,” Tommy Joe answered sadly. “My family…” He shook his head again and covered his face with his hands, the tears coming faster as he tried to hold back his sobs.
Adam bit his lip and pulled Tommy Joe to his chest, holding him tightly. Tommy wrapped his arms around Adam and buried his face in the younger man’s neck. “Shh, baby,” Adam murmured soothingly as he rubbed Tommy’s back. “It’ll be okay. It’ll all be okay.”
“Don’t lie to me, Adam,” Tommy muttered. “It’s not okay. It will never be okay that my mom and sister won’t be at my wedding. It’ll never be okay that they’ll never meet you, that they’ll never see how happy you make me, how in love I am. How much you love me.” He took a shuddering breath. “I miss them, Adam. I miss them so much. It’s been six fucking months and I just… do they even know what happened to me? Do they know I’m okay? I just… I can’t stand this!” He buried deeper in to his future husband, crying in to his neck.
“Tommy Joe, it will be okay and you will get all those things,” Adam said. “I promise you.”
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” Tommy whispered. Adam drew back a little and cupped Tommy Joe’s tear-stained face in his large hands.
“You should know by now I never make promises I can’t keep,” he stated. “If you want your mom and your sister to be there, then they will be. I can make it happen. Okay, well, I can’t, but Rebecca can.”
“How?” Tommy sniffled.
Adam smiled gently. “She can arrange to have them come here for the wedding. They’ll have Marshalls with them and they won’t know where the wedding will be until they get there.”
“We… we can really do that?” Tommy asked hopefully, wiping at his eyes.
Adam nodded. “If you don’t mind that it’ll only be your mom and sister and my mom, dad and brother with at least one Marshall per person. And, ya know, the preacher. Can't have a wedding without one of those.” A small smile appeared on Tommy Joe’s face at hearing Adam’s joke. Adam smiled widely in return. “Now that’s what I like to see,” he murmured, gently rubbing the tears from his fiancé’s smooth skin.
After a few moments of gentle touches, Adam looked at Tommy Joe with seriousness in his eyes. “Do you feel better now, babe?” he asked. Tommy gave him a shy smile and nodded. Adam smiled back, the serious look disappearing from his face. “Good.” Then he leaned in and placed his lips against Tommy’s. “I love you,” he whispered. “And you’ve made my night.”
Tommy grinned. “I love you too and I could say the same about you, you know.”
Adam smiled bashfully, a light blush rising to his cheeks. “I’d do anything to make you happy.”
Tommy leaned forward and rested his forehead against Adam’s. “Just be here,” he murmured. “Just stay with me, for the rest of eternity. That’s all you need to do.”
Adam rubbed his nose against Tommy’s affectionately. “That I can do.” Tommy sighed happily. He was going to marry the man of his dreams and do it in the presence of his family. What could be better?
