CHAPTER SIXTEEN: coming out
It's been about a month, give or take, since Benji and I first had sex. There are exactly thirty-four days till the first day of our senior year in high school. It's exciting because that means after one hundred eighty days of school, I'll be graduating and I'll never have to go to school again. But it's also a bit frightening. The whole you're-done-school-it's-time-for-the-real-world deal. But as long as I'm with Benji, I think I'll be okay.
Now I'm stood outside of Target waiting for my dear boyfriend to pick me up. He had today off. I shift from one foot to the other nervously. I've been thinking all day. It's time to tell my parents. The anticipation is slowly killing me.
Benji finally pulls up along-side the curb. I slide into the car, throwing my bag at my feet. Benji smiles and squeezes my hand. That's how he always greets me in public.
I throw him a weak smile. Benji shifts into drive and pulls away from the curb. As he starts to make his way around the parking lot, I speak up.
"I'm gonna tell my parents I'm gay," I blurt out. Benji slams on the brakes.
"You're gonna what now?!" He looks at me.
"I'm gonna tell my parents that I'm gay," I whisper, wringing my hands.
Benji pulls into the nearest parking space and parks. Then he turns to me, but I'm looking down at my hands.
"What made you decide this?" he asks. I shrug.
"You didn't kiss me when I got in the car," I say quietly.
"Seb-"
"I know," I interrupt. "That's totally my fault. But when I've spent a long day at work and my boyfriend picks me up, all I want is for him to kiss me hello. Ya know?" I finally look at Benji. He nods.
"Same here," he replies.
"That's why I need to tell them," I say. "I mean, I want everyone to know I'm in love with you." Benji smiles.
"Really?"
"Well, yeah." I return the smile. Benji leans over to peck my lips. My smile turns to a grin.
"Benj?"
"Yeah?"
"Will you stay with me while I tell them?" I ask. Benji smiles gently.
"Of course, Seba. I'm behind you one hundred percent." We kiss again. Benji squeezes my hand.
"Okay. Lets go tell your parents," he says. Then we're off to my house.
We pull into my driveway and I just sit there staring at my house.
"Tell me whenever you're redy," Benji says. I nod and grab my bag.
"I'm ready." Benji squeezes my hand. Then we climb from the car.
I set my bag down in the front hall.
"Hello?" I call out.
"In the kitchen!" my mom replies. I look at Benji. He squeezes my arm. I take a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. Then I turn and lead Benji to the back of the house.
My mom's cooking dinner and my dad's sat at the breakfast table reading the paper. Benji and I sit down across from my father. I take hold of Benji's hand under the table.
"Mom, Dad, I um, have something to tell you," I say.
"You boys aren't in trouble now, are you?" my dad asks, setting the paper down. I shake my head.
"No, it's nothing like that," I tell him. My mom sits down beside her husband.
"Then what is it, Seb?" she asks.
"Um, well...I don't know how well you're going to take this, but....I uh, I'm gay."
My parents look at me with blank stares. Then my mom speaks.
"Honey, what are you talking about? You're not gay." She says the word with disgust.
"I am gay, Mom. David didn't force me to kiss him. We were dating," I explain.
"This is absurd!" my father bellows. "I did not raise my son to be gay! Haven't I taught you anything about morales?!"
"Dad, you didn't raise me to be gay. I was born this way."
"This is sick," my father says. "You need help. We'll find the best treatment facility in the country for you. You'll get better, you'll see." I don't know whether to be sad or angry.
"This is not a sickness," I tell my parents. "A lot of people are gay."
"But it's not right," my mother replies. "It's a sin."
"If it's such a sin, then why did God make me this way?" I challenge.
I knew as soon as the words left my mouth, that they were not the right ones to say. My father's face has gone bright red with anger.
"Do not blame your sinful ways on the Lord!" he shouts. "You're a disgrace to this family! I want you out!" Tears spring to my eyes and I nod.
"I'm sorry you feel that way," I state, slowly standing. "Because you're my parents and I'll always love you. I'm sorry it had to end like this."
Benji and I are still holding hands. My parents see this and they look disgusted.
"We'll be by tomorrow to get his things," Benji says. I look at my parents for a moment hoping they'll miraculously change their minds in the next five seconds. But they don't. So I lead Benji out of the house. When we get into the car I say,
"Just drive. I need to get as far away from here as possible." Benji nods and backs out of the drive.
We drive for quite some time. Then Benji pulls on to a dirt road surrounded by woods. After about two miles, we pull into a clearing. Benji parks and kills the engine. He gets out of the car while I just sit and stare at the dashboard.
My door opens. I look up at my boyfriend. He holds out his hand. I grasp it and slide from the car. As Benji walks me to a nearby bench, I notice we're at a pond or lake. The view's pretty.
We sit side-by-side and Benji puts his arm around my shoulders.
"I knew they'd react badly," I start. "I just didn't know it would hurt like this." I finally let the tears fall.
"C'mere," Benji says softly, pulling me to his chest and wrapping his arms around me tightly. I rest my head on his shoulder and stare through my tears at the lake.
The two of us sit at the lake for a long time, neither of us speaking. We sit until the sun sets over the water. Until I've cried every last tear. Then Benji breaks the silence.
"Lets get you home."
"I don't have a home," I state softly.
"Your home is my home," Benji replies. He stands and pulls me to my feet. I hug him tightly. Then we get in the car and go "home."

Butterflies live in your stummy?
Poor Sebbypoo :[ I wish his parents were accepting. I don't think I've ever read a story where his parents accept him as gay. Well I have... but it's kind of rare. Anyways, things will get better :] Sebby has a good new home now.
