CHAPTER TWO
Julie set Grace in her swing so she could fold a basket of laundry. When she was done, she had to change Grace's diaper again. Julie rocked her till she fell sleep. Then she put the sleeping bundle in her bassinet and fell asleep herself in the bed next to Grace.
Julie awakened from a deep sleep to the crying of her baby.
"I'm coming, Gracie," she said. Then all was quiet. Julie sat up quickly, swinging her legs over the side of the bed, and opened her eyes. What she saw was a shock to her, but not totally. Taylor was pacing the floor with little Grace in his arms. Julie watched him silently for a moment.
"Tay." Taylor stopped and looked at Julie.
"Hey, you're up," he said gently.
"How'd you get in?" Julie asked. Taylor sat down beside her saying,
"I used my key." Julie took Grace gently in her arms.
"You still have the key to my house?" Taylor nodded.
"I kept everything you gave me." Julie looked at Taylor, but he was staring down at the baby. "She's beautiful, isn't she?" he said looking up. His blue eyes sparkled. Julie nodded.
"She takes after you." Taylor didn't say anything, he just smiled.
Julie stood.
"Grace needs a diaper change. It's been a while," she announced. Taylor stood up too.
"Let me do it." Julie looked up at him. Then she nodded.
"Okay." She let Taylor take Grace from her.
Taylor headed for the changing table in the adjoining bathroom. Julie followed. She watched Taylor closely as he took care of their baby. It was odd to think of Grace as their baby, let alone Taylor's. But then again, he was the only one she wanted to father her baby.
Julie leaned against the door frame, crossing her arms over her chest.
"What have you been up to?" she asked.
"I've been working and taking care of Ezra," Taylor answered. He lifted Grace up and cuddled her to his chest. Then he turned to Julie. "And I've been missing you." Julie didn't know how to respond. She looked down at the floor.
"Lets go sit and talk," Taylor suggested. Julie nodded. Then she led the way to the living room.
Taylor and Julie sat next to each other on the couch.
"Why did you wait so long to tell me?" Taylor asked. Julie looked down at her hands. She shrugged.
"What would you have done?" Taylor sighed.
"I would have been there for you. I would have come to the hospital." Julie looked at Taylor.
"You don't need to feel bad," she said. "We're doing fine without you." Taylor gave her a hurt look. Julie thought she was going to cry for the third time that day.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I feel bad because I missed my daughter's birth. I missed the first four months of her life. And it's because you didn't tell me!" Taylor said angrily. Grace started to cry. "Shh, Gracie. Daddy didn't mean to yell. Shh." He rocked her gently.
"She might be hungry," Julie said, reaching for Grace. Taylor nodded, handing the baby over.
Grace calmed down and sucked hungrily on her mother's breast.
"Wow, look at her go," Taylor commented quietly. Julie nodded.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you right away," she apologized. "It's just that, you had married Natalie. I didn't want to be a homewrecker." Taylor put his arm around Julie's shoulders and kissed her head.
"I wouldn't have thought you were a homewrecker," he said. "I would have been so happy if you had told me sooner. Not that I'm not happy now. But you know what I mean." Julie nodded.
