Summary: Childhood friends Tommy and Athena have been in love with each other since the seventh grade, but neither knew how the other felt. That is, until Tommy decided to take a job in Texas, a long way from their hometown in New Hampshire. With the threat of being separated permanently, Athena decides to make her feelings known. How will they work around the challenge of living so far apart? Will this long-distance relationship work out? Or were they doomed from the beginning?
CHAPTER ONE
“Athena!” Rose Matthews called up the stairs to her daughter. “Are you ready yet? We’re going to be late!”
Athena rolled her eyes from where she stood in front of the bathroom mirror. “Just a sec!” she called back. She put her headband back in place, gave herself the once-over again and finally trotted down the stairs.
“What took you so long?” Rose asked. “The party starts in…” She looked at her watch. “Ten minutes!”
“Sorry,” Athena muttered. “I just wanted to look good.”
“Sweetie, you always look good,” Rose replied. Athena rolled her eyes as she headed towards the door, picking her bag up from the kitchen table along the way.
“Oh, I know what this is about,” Rose said, following her daughter out the door. “This is about Tommy.”
“Of course it’s about Tommy,” Athena replied. “It’s his going away party after all.”
Rose unlocked the car doors and they both climbed in. “No, I mean this is about Tommy and the way you feel about him.”
Athena sighed. “Can we drop it?”
“Only if you admit it.”
Athena scrubbed her face with her hands. “Fine, you want me to admit it? Then yes, this is about what I feel for Tommy. I mean, Christ, he’s moving half way across the country. He’ll be in a different timezone! I don’t… I don’t know if I’ll even see him again.” She looked down at her hands, suddenly sadder than she had been five seconds ago.
Rose scoffed. “Athena, of course you’ll see him again,” she said. “He’ll come back for holidays and things. His whole family lives on the East coast.”
Athena crossed her arms over her chest and stared out her window, watching the world pass by. Her mother was probably right. Tommy would probably come home for holidays, but Athena wasn’t sure how many. She didn’t think being the program director of a year round camp paid a whole ton. There might be plenty of years where he wouldn’t be able to come back because of funds. Who really knew? All Athena could think was that this was goodbye. Tomorrow Tommy and his mother would be setting out to drive to Texas and Athena would be left here, with her heart crushed.
Athena sat in a chair in the corner, watching as Tommy made the rounds. He was all smiles and laughs, hugging people and taking his congratulations and I’ll miss you’s with grace and charm. Everyone was happy for Tommy. Athena suspected she was the only one who wasn’t beyond thrilled for him. Even his mom seemed happy, albeit a little sad that her only boy would be moving half way across the country. Athena sighed and sipped her Coke, praying they would get to leave soon. But her prayers went unanswered as she and her mom were some of the last to leave.
When it was Athena’s turn to say goodbye to Tommy, she stepped up to him and was enveloped in a tight hug. She hugged Tommy back just as tightly, her eyes filling with tears. “I’m gonna miss you,” she told him quietly.
“I’ll miss you too,” Tommy replied, which only served to make the tears Athena was holding back, drip down her face.
“I love you,” she whispered and with a squeeze, she let Tommy go and was out the door before he could say a word to her.
Athena leaned back against the car door, waiting for her mom to come outside. Tears were still streaking down her cheeks and she just wanted to leave. She wanted to go home and curl up in her bed and cry herself to sleep. She had been in love with Tommy for so long but had never acted on her feelings. Now, thirteen years after figuring out how she felt about him, she wished she had done something sooner. She wished she had told him back in seventh grade exactly how she had felt, and still felt. But now it was too late for anything to happen, even though she had said those three words to him. He was leaving bright and early tomorrow morning and he probably figured that she had said the sentiment out of an almost lifelong friendship and not what it really was.
Athena sighed and wiped at her face just as the front door opened and her mom walked outside. As soon as Rose clicked the unlock button on her key chain, Athena jumped in the car and clicked her seat belt in to place. The two women drove home in silence.
