CHAPTER ONE: the new kid
It's my first day of high school in Waldorf, Maryland. I'm a junior this year. I'm walking down the hall, looking intently at the blue piece of paper that has my class schedule on it. I'm totally not paying attention to where I'm going, as I'm now running into another person. All my books go crashing to the floor.
"Fuck," I curse, stooping down to gather my books. I hear a mock gasp and then a voice says,
"My virgin ears!" I snort.
"Yeah. Right."
"Now really, that hurts," the stranger replies.
I stand, finally getting a look at the other guy as he hands me the rest of my books. He looks about my age, 17. He has jet-black hair, spiked up, andpretty brown eyes. He has baggy black Dickies on and a Rancid T.
He sticks his hand out saying,
"I'm Benji." I look down at Benji's hand, then return my gaze to his. His hand falls to his side.
"Gotta get to homeroom," I state and walk arounnd this punk-like boy.
Benji falls in place beside me.
"You're new here, aren't you?" he asks.
"Yeah," I answer.
"So, what's your name?" Benji asks.
"Are you going to beat me up after I tell you?" I counter.
"No. But if you'd like, I can point you in the right direction," Benji replies with a cheeky grin. I shake my head and look down at my schedule.
I can feel Benji reading over my shoulder.
"So your name's Sebastien," he states.
"It's Seb," I grumble.
"Okay. Well, Seb, did you know your homeroom is in the other direction?" Benji asks. I stop and look at him.
"How do you know?"
"Because I'm in it."
"Oh." I look down at my feet, rubbing the back of my neck. Then I look back up saying, "Maybe we should uh, turn around?"
"Probably." Benji shrugs. We turn around and head in the opposite direction.
We walk down the hall in silence for a while. As we reach the classroom, Benji speaks.
"I'll introduce you to Joel." He opens the door.
"Who's Joel?" I ask.
"My brother," Benji answers, leading me to the back of the room. We come to a dark-haired boy sitting on his desk. Hie head turns and my jaw drops.
"What?" Joel asks.
"You're-You're twins," I say. Joel and Benji look at each other, then back at me.
"Joely, this is Seb. Seb, this is Joel," Benji introduces us as I sit in an empty seat.
"So, you really are twins?" I ask. Benji and Joel nod.
"But I happened to get all the good looks," Benji says with a grin.
"Uh, Benj, you're forgetting that we're identical," Joel replies. Benji looks at his brother then looks back at me.
"Like I said, I got all the looks," he tells me. Joel rolls his eyes and I shake my head.
At that moment, a goth-looking boy comes over. He hugs Benji and Joel, kissing the former on the cheek. Then he flops into the seat behind me. He pokes my shoulder asking,
"Who's this?" I turn my head to look at him.
"Billy, this is Seb. Seb, this is Billy. This is Seb's first day," Benji answers. Billy studies me for a moment. Then he asks rather bluntly,
"Are you gay?" I'm totally shocked at this.
"Why would you ask such a thing?!" I counter, almost defensively. Billy shrugs.
"You're cute. I just wanted to know if I had a chance with you," he explains. I roll my eyes and turn back to the twins.
"You should be nice to someone who says you're cute," Billy tells me.
"Bite me," I reply. Then I turn around, facing forward in my seat as the bell rings.
During homeroom we take attendance and we listen to the morning announcements over the PA system. But I'm not paying attention really. I'm doodling in my binder. My foot gets nudged. I look down at Benji's scruffy Chuck. He lifts his foot slightly to show a square of paper. I discreetly move my foot over the note.
I knock my pen onto the floor. When I bend down to get it, I pick up the note also. I slump back in my chair, propping my binder on my stomach as it leans against the desk. In this position I can open the note without the teacher noticing. Inside there's sloppy handwriting that reads:
What are you doing after school?
I glance at Benji. He is sitting quietly, tapping his pen on the desk. I scribble a message back.
Talk to me after class.
I refold the note. Then I lean over to Benji.
"You got a pen I can use?" I whisper. Benji nods, producing a pen fgrom his pocket. As he hands it to me, I slip him the note. Then I sit back in my seat and wait for the bell to ring.
At the end of homeroom, Benji follows me into the hall. He gently grabs my arm to stop me. I look at him.
"So?" he asks.
"So what?" I counter.
"What are you doing after school?" he asks.
"Why?"
"I dunno. I was thinking we could hang out or something," Benji answers.
"Are you gay?" I ask.
"Why? Does that matter?"
"Maybe." I shrug.
"If I said I was, would you not want to hang out?" Benji asks.
"It depends," I answer.
"On?"
"If you're doing this as a way of hitting on me." Benji nods in understanding.
"Well, you're in luck," he tells me. "Cause that isn't my motive." I eye him suspiciously.
"Then what is your motive?" I ask. Benji shoves his hands in his pockets.
"I know what it's like to be a loner," he says. "I mean, I've always had Joel, but it still sucked. Then we met up with Billy and Paul and Aaron. We're like a group of loners. School isn't so bad with all of them here." He shrugs. "I just thought if you had at least me, being new wouldn't be so tough on you. Plus, if I like you, Joel will. And we know Billy likes you. And if the three of us think you're cool, so will Paul and Aaron. The five of us tend to gravitate towards the same kind of people. So, I dunno." He shakes his had. "I just thought, maybe, we could be friends." He shrugs again.
It seems his confidence is wearing thin. But that's okay. It makes him less cocky. I nod.
"Yeah, okay. I have nothing to do after school. Except go home to an empty house," I tell him. Benji grins.
"Cool." There's a beat of silence before he speaks again. "Lemme see your sched." I hand it to him. I watch his expression as he looks it over. His eyes begin to shine and he grins.
"Guess what," he says, handing me back the blue paper.
"What?" I ask.
"You have the same schedule as me," Benji answers.
"We have all the same classes together?" I ask. Benji nods. I nod too.
Benji starts down the hall. I keep pace with him.
"We have history now with Mr. Reed," he tells me. The bell rings and I groan.
"Late on my first day."
"Don't worry," Benji assures me. "We'll make it before the late bell."
And he's right. As soon as I close the classroom door, the bell rings. Mr. Reed looks at us.
"Ah, Mr. Madden. So good of you to join us today," he says.
"Well, you know, I always like to be a little fashionably late," Benji replies, grinning. Mr. Reed turns to me.
"Mr. Lefebvre, you're new here," he begins. "You're not making such a good start. I'd advise, if you don't want trouble, to stay away from Mr. Madden here." Benji screws up his face. I link my arm with his and lift my chin.
"Thank you for your advice, Mr. Reed," I tell him. "But I think I'm of an appropriate age to decide who I will and will not associate with." Mr. Reed looks baffled. Benji grins and winks at me as he leads us to two empty seats in the back. I wink back at him.
For the rest of the day I stick with Benji. He helps me find my way around the school since we have all the same classes. He introduces me to Paul and Aaron. At lunch, the six of us sit together. I keep quiet the whole time, enjoying watching the other five interact. After meeting Benji, school wasn't too torturous.
