CHAPTER FOUR
Once home from the hospital I pull a bottle of Grey Goose from my freezer and take a shot. The clear liquid burns as it makes it's way down my throat. I embrace the feeling. Before tucking the alcohol away, I take a second swallow for good measure. Then I make my way to the back of the house.
I take my guitar from it's velvet-lined case and sit with it on my leather couch. All of Taylor's papers are spread out across the coffee table. I glance over them as I tune my instrument. Then I begin to play what's already been written. I play through it a few times, singing under my breath, when it comes to me. The words flow easily from my brain to the pen in hand and onto the paper.
I play the new verse a few times, fiddling with the exact wording until I feel it's adequate. Then I play the whole song through. I close my eyes as I sing the heartfelt lyrics and by the time I'm done, tears flow unchecked down my face. I carefully put my guitar in it's case and head to my bedroom. With blurry eyes, I climb onto my bed, burying my face in Taylor's old shirt and cry myself to sleep.
I'm at my most favorite beach in Australia, just sitting in the sand.
"Sorry I'm late." I look up, shielding my eyes from the bright Australian sun. It's Taylor. He flops down in the sand beside me and pecks me on the lips. I stare at him, surprised. He raises an eyebrow at me.
"Was I not supposed to do that?" he asks.
"I-I don't know," I stumble, still confused. Taylor grins and takes my hand.
"Lets go for a walk." Before I can answer, he's pulling me to my feet and closer to the water's edge.
We walk side-by-side, the water gently lapping at our feet. After we've traveled down the sand for a few moments, I get up the nerve to speak.
"Tay... What are we doing here?" I ask. "You're sick. You're supposed to be in the ICU."
My brother shrugs. "I checked out."
"You did? Are you better? Were the doctors wrong?" I have so many questions for him.
"The doctors weren't wrong," he answers quietly. Then with a bright smile he says, "So did you finish the song?"
I smile and nod my head. "Yeah, it really wasn't all that hard to do. I just... spoke from the heart." I shrug.
"Will you play it for me?" Taylor asks.
"I don't have a guitar," I reply.
"There's one with our blanket," Taylor says, pointing to the only blanket on the sand. Wondering how those things got there, I let Taylor lead us over to our blanket where, sure enough, my guitar is laying in wait.
Taylor lays down on the blanket and folds his arms behind his head, his eyes closed against the burning UV rays.
"Are you going to play?" he asks quietly.
"Uh, yeah, sure," I answer pulling my guitar from it's case. It's the same guitar I wrote the song on.
I take a deep breath and begin to play for my older brother. I keep my eyes closed as I play for two reasons. One being I just can't look at Taylor while singing this specific song. The other being that I'm trying desperately not to cry. But by the end of the song, tears are rolling down my cheeks.
I put my guitar back in it's case and rub at my eyes with my fists. Then I turn back towards my brother. He's sitting up, staring at me with his head cocked to the side. Tears slip out from under his darkly tinted glasses. He slides the frames up into his hair. Without saying a word, he pulls me to his chest and kisses me so softly and sweetly. My breath catches in my throat and tears flood my eyes.
I pull back, practically sobbing. Taylor cradles me to his chest murmuring, "It won't be long now, till I have to leave." I look up at him with frantic eyes.
"What? You just got here. You can't leave yet." Taylor pushes my hair back from my face.
"I'm sorry, babe," he murmurs. "But I can't stay here. I have to go into the light."
That's when it hits me. He didn't so much "check out" of the hospital as he's died.
"No, Tay," I whimper. "You can't leave me. Not now. Not after everything we said in that song. Please, Tay, just a little longer." I'm begging at this point.
Taylor lays back on the beach blanket, pulling me down with him. I cuddle into his side, pressing myself as tightly as I can to his body. Taylor wraps me in a tight embrace, kissing my hair and whispering, "I'll stay until the sun sets. But then I really have to go, okay?"
"No, not okay," I pout stubbornly.
"I love you, Zachary Hanson. Don't ever forget it," Taylor says. "You're my soulmate and I'll always be with you."
Everything starts to fade as a distant ringing sounds. The louder the ringing gets, the more things fade until Taylor is just a wisp of memory. Then I realize that the ringing is the phone on my nightstand.
I blink the sleep from my eyes as I reach for the phone. The screen reads Natalie. I answer without a greeting and say,
"He's gone, isn't he?"
"Yeah, Zac, he is."
I don't respond. I just press the end button and put the phone back where I got it. Then I hunker down under the blankets and wait for this nightmare to be over.
