Summary: When you wish upon a star…
CHAPTER TWO
When practice is over, it's just beginning to get dark outside and the first stars of the night are beginning to shine. I stare up at the sky, watching the stars come out, twinkling one by one. "Make a wish," Aaron whispers in my ear. I choose the brightest star and close my eyes.
"Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, have this wish I wish tonight," I murmur, then make my wish.
I wish I knew how Aaron feels about me.
I open my eyes and look at my friend who's staring at me. "What?" I ask.
"What'd you wish for?" Aaron asks.
I grin at him. "Can't tell. If I do, it won't come true."
Aaron grins back at me. "But what if someone could help make your wish come true? Shouldn't you tell them what your wish was?"
I laugh lightly and shake my head. "You're just trying to get me to tell. And I won't, I really want this one to come true."
"So do I," Aaron murmurs. I look at him confused. "I just mean, you deserve all your wishes to come true." It's too dark to be sure, but I think he's blushing.
I smile fondly at him. "Thanks. You deserve that too." We stand there for a moment, just smiling at each other. Then we all climb in to our cars and head home.
When I get inside my apartment, I sigh and throw my bags on the floor, tossing my keys on to the table by the door. Just then a tiger striped cat comes running over to me, rubbing against my legs purring. "Hey, baby," I murmur reaching down to pick up the ten pound fur ball. I walk through the apartment, turning on the lights and head over to my phone. The screen shows that I have one new voicemail. I pick up the phone and go over to my couch, curling the cat up on my lap.
I call my voicemail and press the buttons it tells me to, then I listen.
"Hey, Bear, it's Dad. I was just calling to see how things are going and if you know when your recital is. I hope I can make it this year. Well, I love you. So long."
I smile and hit the delete button. My dad's so cute. I look at the clock on the cable box; eleven pm. It's too late to call. I'll just have to get back to him in the morning. I sigh, getting up and make my way in to the kitchen to grab a bottle of water, Sparky following right on my heals.
I open the bottle and take a swig. It's late, I might as well go to bed. So I make my way back to the living area, flipping off the lights. Then I head towards my bedroom, Sparky still following. When we enter my room, Sparky immediately climbs up on the double bed and curls in to a ball up near the pillows and begins to wash his face. I grab my pajamas and head in to the adjoining bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth.
After all my nightly routines are finished, I climb in to bed with my cat, who's purring loudly, and switch on my TV. I flip through the stations before settling on HGTV. House Hunters International is on. It's sure to lull me to sleep. I set the sleep timer on the TV and turn off my lights, snuggling down under my blankets. I close my eyes and listen to the people wandering through some house in Belize when my phone rings. I groan and look at the caller ID.
It's Aaron. I quickly pick up the phone and put it to my ear. "'ello?" My voice sounds a little rough.
"Were you asleep already?" Aaron asks.
"No, I just barely got in bed. What's up?" I ask.
"Nothing much," my friend answers.
"Okay..." I say slowly.
I hear the bass player sigh. "It's nothing really. Well, it's something, but nothing important really."
"Aaron, just spit it out. It's got to be somewhat important for you to call me," I tell him.
He sighs again. "It's just... Earlier, at practice, before everyone got there... Were we about to kiss?"
I suck in a breath, not knowing how to answer that. I guess honesty would probably be the best course of action. Maybe my wish will come true. "Yes," I breathe.
"Was it... was it weird for you?" Aaron asks.
I grin to myself. "What was weird was everyone showing up on time," I joke, even though I'm serious.
A chuckle comes over the line. "Yeah, that was weird." There's a beat of silence. "So the almost kiss wasn't weird for you?"
"I... I don't really... I mean, at the time it wasn't weird. But talking about it now..." I let my sentence trail off, unsure of what else to say.
"Yeah, this is kind of weird," Aaron agrees. "But I just..." He sighs. "I needed to know it wasn't just me." I can picture him right now, feeling all awkward, biting at one of his snake bites. It's kind of adorable when he does that and I can't help smiling at the image.
"No, Aaron," I murmur. "It wasn't just you." There's a beat of silence. "I um... Do you want to know what I wished for tonight?"
"Of course." I can hear the grin in his voice.
"I um, I kind of, I wished that you would tell me how you feel about me," I say, my stomach twisting in knots.
"Oh, so you're saying that I can help make your wish come true?" Aaron teases.
I feel myself blush in the dim light of the TV. "Yeah, I guess that's what I'm saying. Now are you going to help me?" I can give it just like I can take it.
"Well..." He continues to tease me.
"Aaron!" I exclaim, laughing.
"Okay, okay, I'll help you out. But only 'cause I like you," he says. Then there's silence.
"So... Are you going to clue me in?" I ask.
Aaron laughs. "Oh, Sweetie, you're having a blond moment. Did you even hear what I said?" I think back to what he just told me and it finally clicks. My face feels like it's on fire.
"Oh," I murmur. "So I'm having a bad day, sue me." I feel my lower lip stick out in a pout.
"Aw, I didn't mean it like that. Come on," Aaron replies.
"I know," I assure him. "But the guy I've had a crush on for, like, ever just told me he likes me and I completely missed it."
There's a moment of silence and then Aaron says, "You have a crush on me?"
"I... yeah," I answer softly.
"That makes me feel better about having a crush on you for forever," he says. I smile to myself snuggling deeper under the blankets.
"So, um, you have anything else you need to talk about?" I ask.
"I don't know. I was thinking that maybe we should go on a date some time, if you want," Aaron suggests.
A warm feeling washes over me, settling in the pit of my stomach. "I'd like that," I murmur.
"Yeah?"
I nod. "Yeah."
"Are you free tomorrow night?" Aaron asks.
"Someone's a little impatient," I tease.
Aaron chuckles. "Well, I have been wanting to ask you out for years. I think I've waited long enough."
I grin. "Years?"
"Yes, years," the bass player answers seriously.
"To be honest, I've been waiting years too," I tell him quietly.
"What were we so scared of?" he murmurs.
"Rejection? Ruining our friendship? Ruining the band?" I list.
"Yeah, all of that." There's a beat of silence. "So are you free tomorrow?" he asks.
I grin. "I think it can be arranged," I tell him.
"Good," Aaron replies. "Well, I guess I'll let you get to sleep then."
"Okay. Goodnight, Aaron."
"Goodnight, Katy. See you tomorrow."
"Yeah, tomorrow."
We hang up and I snuggle under my blankets, a grin splitting my face. Out the window, one lone star shines bright through the city lights. I close my eyes and make a wish.
Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, have this wish I wish tonight. I wish this will be the start of a beautiful relationship.
