CHAPTER TEN
Friday morning rolls around and we're all running around like chickens with our heads cut off. I'm hoping this isn't a preview of what's to come. In the midst of all the chaos, a little girl's voice pierces the air.
"MOM-MA!" The Hanson brothers and I all pop into the living room from our various locations to look at the toddler.
I kneel down in front of Penny, brushing her hair back from her face.
"What is it, Baby?" I ask.
"I'm firsty," she says.
"Okay. You want some water?" She nods. My mom comes over to us and takes Penny by the hand.
"Why don't we let Mama finish packing and I'll get you your water?" she says. Penny nods.
"Okay." Then she lets my mom lead her into the kitchen.
Taylor holds out his hand for me and I take it, getting back to my feet.
"Did she call you what I think she called you?" he asks. I nod.
"Yeah." Taylor looks at the floor and mumbles what I assume is an apology.
"Tay... It's okay," I tell him. The blond peers up at me through his lashes.
"But you're not..." My heart clenches.
"Her mother?" I finish. Taylor nods, looking almost sheepish. "I know, Tay. I'm just the nanny." I turn abruptly and go back to packing.
After a tearful goodbye to my mom, we're on the road to Boston. Now I'm alone in the lounge, curled up in a corner of the couch crying. It hasn't even been an hour since we left my house and I'm already completely homesick.
Someone comes in the room and sits next to me on the couch. I look at them from behind my hands. It's Zac. I wipe my face with the cuff of my hoodie and Zac gives me a sympathetic smile. Then he gently brushes my hair out of my face.
"Hey," he says softly.
"Hey," I reply miserably.
"Are you okay?" he asks. I give him a pointed look. "Yeah, I know, stupid question."
I look at the younger man tearfully.
"I've never been away from home for more than a week at a time," I tell him. "I hate feeling this way." Zac pulls me against him, letting me cry into his shirt as I cling to his arm.
"Shh," he whispers. "It's okay." His large hand rubs soothing circles into my back, trying to calm me. And after a while, it works.
I take a deep breath and wipe at my face.
"I don't want to sound ungrateful," I begin, "but why are you here? Why isn't Taylor in here?" I sniffle a little and Zac sighs.
"I don't know why he isn't here comforting you," he says. "And I think it sucks that he isn't." I press my face against the drummer's chest, a fresh wave of tears hitting me.
"It's okay," Zac whispers. "Everything's okay."
As I sit, silently wetting my friend's t-shirt, someone else enters the room.
"Can we have a moment?" I recognize Taylor's soft voice. Then I feel Zac nod and he gently pushes me away.
"Just yell if you need anything," he tells me. I nod, wiping at my eyes. Then he kisses my forehead and leaves the room.
I pull my knees up to my chest and wrap my arms around my shins. Taylor's just standing there with his hands in his pockets. But after a moment of silence, he speaks.
"Are you okay?" he asks. I give him a cold look.
"What do you think?" Taylor nods. Then the blue-eyed singer cautiously takes a seat beside me.
"What's wrong?" he asks quietly. I sniff and give him a shrug.
Taylor moves closer and rubs my back gently. Then he leans in to kiss my temple.
"Talk to me," he whispers. I chew my lip in thought for a moment before deciding to take the singer up on his offer.
I sigh and run my fingers through my hair a little.
"I'm just... I'm a little homesick. That's all." I shrug. Taylor wraps his arm around my shoulders, pulling me against his side.
"Come 'ere," he whispers. I give in, turning towards him and snuggling into him. "You're okay," he tells me. There's a pause, then he says, "Can I tell you something?" I nod, sniffing.
"The first time we ever went on tour, I was homesick," he says.
"Really?" I ask quietly. Taylor nods, leaning his head against mine.
"I was so sad for the first few days," he confides. "We'd play a show and it'd be so great. But then we'd go back to a hotel or ride on the bus all night and I just really missed my bed."
"How'd you get over it?" I ask him.
"You really wanna know?" Taylor counters. I nod. He kisses my head. "I'll be right back." Then he leaves the room.
Taylor comes back a moment later, holding something behind his back. I peer at him curiously.
"What do you have?" He sits down next to me and produces a shabby little brown bear with a blue ribbon around it's neck.
"What's this?" I ask, touching the stuffed animal lightly.
"This is Brownie," Taylor answers. "He is what got me passed my homesickness." I raise an eyebrow at the blond.
"When my mom figured out what was going on, she gave me Brownie," he explains. "He smelled like my mom. Like home." I smile at him.
"And what does that smell like?" Taylor blushes slightly.
"Like clean laundry and lilacs."
My smile grows bigger picturing a fourteen year old Taylor Hanson curled up with his bear.
"I never go on tour without him," he tells me.
"So he's gone on the road with you for the past ten years?" I ask. Taylor nods. "That's so sweet, Tay." He looks down at the stuffed toy for a moment, then returns his gaze to mine. He rubs the soft bear againnst my cheek saying,
"If you want, you can borrow Brownie for a while."
"Oh, Tay," I murmur. "I can't take him from you."
"Why not?" he asks.
"He's too special. Your mom gave him to you," I say.
"Yeah, but I think you need him a little more than I do," he replies.
I take the bear from Taylor and smile.
"Thank you." Taylor smiles back at me.
"You're welcome." Then his face goes really soft and gentle. He slowly reaches up to cup the side of my face with his hand. My breath hitches in my throat and my stomach flips with anticipation. Then we lean in at the same time, our lips brushing lightly.
Taylor barely pulls away to look in my eyes before pressing his lips to mine a little more firmly than before. I close my eyes, my heart fluttering and my stomach doing another flip. The kiss seems like it lasts for a lifetime. But when Taylor finally pulls back, it's way too soon.
I press my face against the singer's shoulder, trying to hid the deep blush I can feel heating up my cheeks. Taylor hugs me tightly.
"Feeling better?" he asks. I nod, turning my head slightly so my voice won't be muffled in his shirt.
"I'm not sure it had much to do with Brownie though."
