CHAPTER THREE: phone call

We end up at Billy's mansion house. I look at Benji as he knocks on the door.

"Do you really think Billy will let me call?" I ask.

"Well, he did say he thought you were cute," Benji responds. The door flies open and Joel is stood there.

"Hey guys. Come on in," he says, stepping out of the way. Benji and I enter the house. Then Joel leads us upstairs.

We find Billy seated on his bed playing a video game. He doesn't even glance up at us.

"Hey," he says.

"Hey," Benji replies. "Would you mind if Seb calls long distance?"

"Where to?" Billy asks, keeping his gaze on the TV.

"Canada," I answer quietly. Billy picks up the phone next to him and holds it out in my direction.

"Thanks," I say, taking the phone. I go over to Billy's desk and sit in the swivel chair. Then I slowly dial David's cell phone.

After three rings I hear the voice I've missed so much.

"Hello?" The biggest grin comes over my face.

"David," I say in French. I figure it's highly unlikely the three others in the room are fluent.

"Seb?" David asks.

"Yes," I answer.

"Oh my god! Seb! How?!"

"I made some kick-ass friends. One of them is letting me use their phone."

"Whoever they are, I love them." I laugh, then all goes silent on the line.

"I've missed you so much, David. You don't even know." Tears sting my eyes.

"I've missed you too, Baby. It's been thirty-two days." I laugh a little and wipe my eyes.

"Glad I'm not the only one counting," I say.

"You're crying," David states.

"No," I lie.

"Sebastien. Don't lie to me," David replies. I hang my head and sigh.

"I just....I just can't stand being away from you."

"I know. I miss talking to you. Hearing you laugh. Holding your hand....Kissing you." He says the last part quietly. I sigh.

"I miss all those things too."

There's silence.

"I love you, David," I whisper.

"I love you too, Sebby," David replies. I sniffle and wipe my eyes.

"How's the rest of the gang?" I ask.

"Oh, Seb, they miss you. But of course, not as much as I do," David answers. "Pat even made this two hour video of footage that's just you. I can't even tell you how many times I've watched it." I smile slightly.

"Sounds like you're obsessed," I tell him. David's serious as he speaks.

"Of course I am. I miss you. Where are you anyway?" I sigh.

"Waldorf, Maryland."

"Waldorf? Where's that?"

"I have no clue."

"Give me your address. I'll write."

"I can't."

"Why not?" From David's voice, I can tell he's pouting. I wish I could kiss his pout away.

"Because," I sigh. "We live in this developement of town houses. The only way you can get into the mail boxes is with a key. I don't have a key to ours." I hear David sigh.

"This sucks," he says.

An idea pops into my head.

"David, hold on for a sec," I say.

"Okay." I turn to the three on the bed and cover the mouth-piece on the phone.

"Benji, can I ask a huge favor?" I ask. Benji looks at me.

"What is it?"

"Would it be okay if David sent letters to your house for me?" I plead with my eyes. Benji just stares at me for a second. Then he comes over to the desk and scribbles on a piece of paper. He squeezes my shoulder before going back over to the bed.

I grin to myself and place the phone back to my ear.

"David," I speak in French again. "What if I told you, you can write to me?"

"I'd first want to know how," David tells me.

"Benji, one of my new friends, says you can send letters for me to his house," I explain.

"I officially love Benji!" I giggle.

"You want the address then?"

"Hell yeah!" I laugh again, then I tell him Benji's address.

I sigh.

"David, I should probably go now," I say sadly.

"Do you have to?" David whines.

"Yeah, Baby, I'm sorry. Don't want to run up Billy's phone bill too much."

"I guess you're right."

"So you'll write me soon?" I ask hopefully.

"Of course I will." David pauses. "I love you, Sebastien. Don't forget that."

"I won't, Davey. I love you too. So much."

"I love you more."

"I love you most."

"I'll talk to you soon, Sebby."

"I know you will."

"Bye."

"Bye." I sigh as I hang up.

I look over to the bed. Billy isn't playing his game anymore. I stand and move over to the queen-sized bed, sitting down next to Billy. I hug him tightly on immpulse. He hugs back.

"Thank you," I tell him.

"For what?" Billy asks. I pull back to look at him.

"For letting me use your phone," I answer. "I haven't talked to David in thirty-two days. The closest we came to seeing each other was looking out our windows. It's the longest we've been apart in twelve years." I look down at my hands.

"You and David were pretty close, huh?" Joel says. I nod.

"Yeah."

"Not to pry, but is David your boyfriend?" Billy asks. My head shoots up. I'm wide-eyed as I shake my head furiously.

"No! No, it wasn't like that at all!" I lie, hoping they believe me. Billy lifts an eyebrow.

"Oookay," he says. I hang my head again.

*******

I'm silent as Benji walks me home. But after a few blocks, Benji speaks up.

"You lied," he states.

"About what?" I ask, hoping he doesn't really know.

"About you and David," Benji answers.

"What about us?" If he knows, I want him to be specific.

"You said David isn't your boyfriend, but I heard you," Benji says.

"Heard me what?"

"You called him baby. You told him you loved him." I look at the sidewalk.

"You-You speak French?" I ask.

"Not fluently. But I picked up a little the two years I took it in school," Benji explains. I nod, keeping my eyes on the ground. "Is that why you moved here? Because of you and David?" Tears sting my eyes. I stop walking and turn to Benji. His brown eyes are concerned.

"Don't," I say. "Don't make me talk about it." Benji wraps me in a hug.

"It's okay, Seb. You don't have to tell me," he replies. I hug him back, but quickly pull away.

I wipe my eyes.

"You won't tell anyone what you know, will you?" I ask.

"I won't tell if you don't want me to," Benji answers. I nod and take a deep breath.

"Good."

"You're gonna be fine, Seb," Benji tells me.

"I hope so," I say quietly.
