POINT OF NO RETURN

They stood inside the airport, at the point of no return. Once Athena stepped away from Tommy, he would not be allowed to follow, security would not let him through. This is where they had to say goodbye. So Tommy stepped up to her and wrapped his strong arms around her, breathing her in; the smell of her shampoo, or rather his shampoo and how it smelled in her hair, the subtle hint of her citrus perfume. He felt the smallness of her body against his and wondered if he could just pick her up and put her in his pocket, never to be apart again.

Athena leaned in to Tommy’s embrace, wrapping her arms tightly around his slim waist. She couldn’t believe their time was over, that this was it for who knows how long. It wasn't like either of them had a whole lot of money to go flying back and forth, half way across the country. This journey to Tommy’s new home had been unbelievable. She had finally told him how she felt, how she’d always felt, and he had insisted she come to visit his new home. They had spent a week of getting to know each other again; getting to know each other as people who were courting would, instead of just long lost friends.

But now their time was up and Athena didn’t want to let go. She didn’t know if she could, so she held on as tight as she could without cutting off Tommy’s breath. She wept in to his shirt as he stroked her hair. He had no clue what to do in a situation like this. So he just held on tight. “I love you,” he murmured against her hair. “Remember that.”

Athena nodded. “I… I love you too,” she replied through tears.

“It’s so nice to hear that after all these years,” Tommy told her, his heart constricting with the reminder that they could have changed this. That they didn’t have to be here at this moment, saying this heartbreaking goodbye. If only they had said something when they first developed feelings, thirteen years ago when they were in middle school. He sighed as he realized they couldn’t change the past and they would just have to deal with being in a long distance relationship, if that’s what they were doing now. But he didn’t want to ask. He didn’t want to know. It would only make things harder.

Athena pulled away slowly, wiping the tears away gently. “I gotta go,” she stated quietly.

“I know,” Tommy replied, tucking a lock of her short blond hair behind her ear as she stared at the ground. They stood for a moment in silence. But then Athena looked up in to warm brown eyes.

“I’ll miss you,” she whispered.

“I’ll miss you too,” Tommy told her. “But you can always come back. And I can always visit you back home.”

Athena shook her head. “I don’t know what to do,” she said quietly. “I don’t know if I can leave you.”

“You have to,” Tommy murmured. Athena nodded in agreement. She bent down to pick up her bag, but Tommy stopped her. “One thing before you go though.”

Athena straightened up and cocked her head to the side as she looked at him. “What is it?” she asked.

Tommy pulled her close again and pressed his mouth to hers. Athena gasped softly, even though this wasn’t the first time they’d kissed. But every time his lips met hers it was like the first time all over again. She didn’t think she’d ever get used to it.

Her arms wrapped tightly around Tommy’s neck, pulling him closer. She needed to feel every inch of him pressed against her. Needed to remember what it was like to be held and kissed by him. Once she felt she had committed it to memory, she brought the kiss to a peck and slowly pulled away. But Tommy moved forward again, placing his lips gently against her forehead. “I love you,” he whispered against her skin. “Don’t forget.”

“I won’t,” Athena replied. “As long as you don’t forget that I love you too.”

“I won’t,” Tommy whispered. He gave her another tight hug before stepping far enough away that she was out of reach. He watched as her green eyes filled with tears just before she turned away from him and walked towards the first security check-in point.

Love was definitely blossoming between them, as it always had been, but now Tommy knew it was real by the very physical ache in his chest at the sight of Athena walking away, even if it wasn’t for good.
