Prompt 92: her hair fell over her eyes
Jan. 14th, 2008 01:55 pmHer hair fell over her eyes, hiding the brightest blue I have ever seen. Hiding the salty tears that I forced from those blue eyes. I just really want to hug her. But I don't. Instead, I brush her hair back from her face. She looks up at me; so innocent, so shy.
"Thank you," she whispers. I smile a bit sadly.
"It's what Kate would have wanted," I tell her. She nods in response.
Just then, her phone chirps. She smiles at me, turning the alarm off.
"I'm sorry, but I have to get going," she tells me. My heart sinks to my gut.
"Oh, well, um, maybe we should do this again?" I ask. She smiles as she slides on her coat.
"Yeah, that would be nice. I'd like to hear more about Kate," she says. I can only nod. I want to say more, but she's already on her way out of the coffee shop.
I run after the pretty blond, catching up to her at the corner.
"Julie, wait!" She turns around to look at me, the wind whipping her long blond locks across her face.
"Yeah?" she asks as I step up to her.
"I just... I needed to... Fuck it." I take her face gently in my hands and place my lips against hers. I only hold them there for a few seconds before pulling away.
"I don't...I don't understand," she says, clearly in shock.
"Julie, I love you. I know it's hard to believe, but it's true. My wife's heart is beating inside you. And I don't know if that has anything to do with it. But I do know that I haven't laughed or smiled or been this happy since Kate died. You made me laugh and smile and be genuinely happy for the first time in such a long time. I just... I've fallen for you."
By the end of my ranting, Julie's head is down, her hair hiding her eyes. I say her name quietly. She lifts her head, shaking her hair back from her face. Those blue eyes sparkle with unshed tears.
Our gazes connect, blue to brown, and there's that feeling again of just wanting to wrap her up in my arms. The wind whips her hair into her face again. When she pushes it back, I notice those unshed tears have finally made their way down her cheeks.
Slowly, Julie steps closer, wrapping her arms around my neck.
"This heart still beats for you," she whispers. Then she molds her mouth to mine in the sweetest kiss I've ever had.
