CHAPTER TWELVE
Taylor's POV
Zac and I get back on the highway and drive home in a very comfortable silence. We hold hands the entire way. When we get home, Mom stops us to ask if our drive was okay and if the girls made it on to their flight without trouble. We tell her everything went fine. Then my brother and I go up to our room.
As I shut and lock our bedroom door, Zac kicks off his sneakers and flops on his bed face down. I toe off my shoes, kicking them to the corner, then pad quietly over to my brother. I lay down beside him, curling into his side and wrap my arm around his waist.
Zac cracks an eye. I smile at him. Then he turns his face out of his pillow.
"Hey, lover boy," he says. I feel my smile turn into a grin.
"Hey," I reply quietly. He smiles and touches my cheek softly. "Are you just going to lay there, or are you going to let me cuddle with you?" Zac grins and rolls on his side, holding his arms open.
I move closer, curling into my brother's chest, and wrap my arms around him. He nuzzles the top of my head.
"This is the way it should be," he whispers.
"Mmm, yeah," I agree giving him a squeeze.
"You like squeezing me, don't you?" he asks. I grin, squeezing him tightly.
"When I squeeze you, it makes us press tighter together," I explain.
"So you like being pressed close to me," my brother says. I nod.
All of a sudden, Zac rolls us over so he's on top of me, his body flush with mine. I giggle, actually giggle, at the surprise. Zac's resting on his elbow, staring down at me with a smile.
"How's this?" he asks. "Are we close enough for you?" I smile.
"Yes." Then I brush my lips against his.
I stare up at Zac for a moment. He hasn't looked this happy in a long time. And to be quite honest, I haven't felt this good in forever.
"I guess it's time to talk?" I say with a questioning look. Zac nods, crawling off me and laying down on his back beside me. I reach for his hand, lacing our fingers together. Then I tilt my head towards him. He does the same so our heads are touching.
"So," Zac starts, "We've established two very important things so far." I nod. "We love each other very much." I nod again. "And number two, we want to be together." I nod for a third time. "So what else is there to talk about?" Zac asks. I sigh.
"Zac... What does being together mean to you?" I ask my brother.
"I guess to me it means doing things couples do," he answers. "Holding hands, going on dates, getting a place together. You know the kinds of things I mean." I chew on my lower lip.
"But, Zac. We're not a normal couple," I point out. "We're brothers. Famous brothers at that."
I feel Zac shift on the bed. When I look at him, I see he's moved onto his side. I do the same so we're facing each other.
"Are you scared?" Zac asks. "Are you scared of what other people will think?" I avert my eyes and nod. But then I look back at my brother.
"I don't want people to look at me like I'm a disgusting freak," I tell him honestly.
Zac wraps his arms around me.
"Well you should've thought about that before falling in love with your brother," he says teasingly. I glare at him. "Okay, so I guess this isn't the time for joking." I shake my head. "Sorry," he apologizes quietly.
After a minute or two of silence, Zac speaks again.
"If we moved to New York like we've been talking about with Ike, you wouldn't have to be so scared," he says. "There are five burroughs in New York City. There's something like ten million people who live there. You and I will practically be anonymous!" Zac's eyes are all lit up and sparkling. He grins as he continues on enthusiastically.
"Think, Taylor. Ten million people! What's another two? Who's really going to notice? And really, two gay men? That is such a normal occurrence in New York that they won't even take a second look at us. I mean it, Tay, in New York we'll be a normal couple. We'll be completely unnoticed there. I promise."
He's smiling at me. He's so enthusiastic about it. Everything he's said makes sense. But I don't want to get my hopes up. On the other hand, I want what Zac has said to be completely true. I want us to be just another normal couple walking down the street holding hands.
"You promise?" I ask. Zac nods, stroking my cheek with the back of his fingers.
"I promise, Tay. No one will know. It'll be perfect."
"So maybe we should ask Isaac if there are any apartments open in his building," I suggest. Zac's eyes light up. Our older brother already has an amazing apartment lined up in NYC. He'll be moving into it in two months.
"Are you sure?" Zac asks. I nod.
"Yeah. Why not? I mean, we have been talking about it."
Zac's POV
I grin.
"That we have." I nod. Taylor smiles shyly.
"You sure you want your first place away from your parents to be an apartment in New York with me?" he asks. My grin gets bigger.
"Hell yeah!" Taylor laughs.
"Well, okay, if you're sure," he says. I pull him to my chest and nuzzle his cheek.
"I love you," I whisper. Taylor squeezes me.
"I love you too," he replies. No matter how many times he says it, it's always as exciting as the first time.
