CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
Taylor's POV
My brother and I sit quietly, curled on the chair together. After a moment or two, I break the silence asking,
"Do you want to talk about why you were upset?" Zac nods.
"Yeah," he sighs. "When we were at Starbucks, you wouldn't let me touch you. And when I tried to kiss you and you turned away, it pissed me off and it hurt." Zac presses closer to my torso. It almost seems like he can't get close enough, even though he's curled up on my lap.
"I thought the whole reason we moved here was to make a fresh start, no one would have to know we're brothers. And all the new people we'd meet would know us as Zac and Tay, that cute gay couple in 5B." My brother pauses.
"It's just, you used to flaunt being gay back in Tulsa where there were a lot of close-minded people. But here in New York, where a gay couple wouldn't turn one single head, you hide it. It, it just hurt...a lot." Zac shrugs.
I give my brother a squeeze and kiss his hair.
"I'm sorry," I whisper softly. "But back in Tulsa it was different. Completely different. Back in Tulsa I was a normal gay guy; or, really, as normal a guy can be when he's in such a well known band."
I pause to get my thoughts back on track. I play with Zac's hair a moment and he gives me a reassuring squeeze. I take a breath, then begin speaking again.
"You were right when you said I flaunted my sexuality back then. But you see, I was dating and those guys weren't related to me." I sigh. "But then I got to be with you."
I smile to myself and hug Zac close, leaning my head against his.
"I love being with you," I tell him. "But we're brothers. So the past four months we've been hiding our relationship. It's our biggest secret. And it's almost habit now to mask my feelings for you whenever we leave the confines of the apartment." I stop and chew my lower lip for a moment. I open my mouth to speak, but close it again. I take a breath and scratch my head.
"It's not just habit," I admit quietly. "I'm scared that people will find out about us and tear us apart, destroy us. I don't want you to get hurt. I don't want us to get hurt."
I sigh then.
"I'm sorry I don't have as much faith in us as you do," I whisper. Zac sits up better and looks me in the face. He runs his knuckles over my cheek. Then he leans in, kissing me so softly my heart skips a beat.
"I love you, Tay," Zac murmurs. "And as long as we're together I'll be just fine. Okay?" I nod.
Zac kisses my forehead.
"I love you, Baby," he whispers. I rub my nose against his.
"I love you too," I tell him. Then we just sit there, holding each other close.
