CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
Zac's POV
The next day Isaac shows up at the apartment to take me to the studio. It's a couple hours away in a town in the country. From the outside it looks like a normal house, which it used to be. But on the inside it's filled with the latest recording equipment.
When we pull into the driveway, Taylor's already there. He's sat on the front porch smoking a clove cigarette. I wonder how many packs he's smoked since he left our apartment.
"Are you ready?" Isaac asks. I nod. He turns the car off and takes off his seat belt. As he goes to get out of the SUV, I grab him.
"I lied. I'm not ready. I can't do this." My voice sounds a lot less panicked than I feel.
Isaac turns back to me, squeezing my hand.
"Okay, okay. We don't have to get out yet. Just take slow, deep breaths," he tells me. I do as I'm told, but I can feel my brother studying me. "Are you all right, Bud? Do you need to go home?" he asks. I wave my hand, dismissing the idea.
"No, no, I'm fine."
"You sure?" I nod.
"But, can we just sit here a minute or two?" Isaac squeezes my shoulder.
"Sure."
I watch Taylor from my seat in the car. When I see him stub out his cigarette, I finally unbuckle my seat belt and climb from the car. I sling my bag over my shoulder and look at Isaac. He gives me a reassuring smile as he walks around the front of the SUV. Then he puts his arm around my shoulder and leads me to the door.
Taylor's POV
I'm smoking on the front steps of the studio, waiting for my brothers to arrive. When they do, I see Isaac move to get out of the vehicle but Zac stops him. They just sit there while I wait.
After a few minutes I put my cigarette out. As I stand, I watch my brothers climb from the SUV. Isaac puts his arm around Zac as they move towards me, Zac's eyes focused on the ground. He doesn't even look up as our older brother unlocks the door.
I notice Isaac give our younger brother a look as we all get settled. I plop down on the couch, looking from one band member to the other expectantly. Zac pulls some papers from his bag and looks in my general direction.
"I uh, wrote a song and Ike thinks it should be on the record," he says quietly. My heart clenches; he doesn't sound like the Zac I fell in love with.
I'm afraid to speak, so I nod instead. Zac places his sheet music on a stand and gets out his acoustic guitar. He sits, making sure his instrument is in tune. Then he begins to play a song that completely breaks my heart.
"Waking up this morning, thinking this can't be real. But they say there is nothing love can't heal. Why don't you come on down, so you can feel what I feel.
"Sitting all alone in this place, even though we're here face to face. There is nothing gone, but there's something wrong.
"Can't you see that I'm stuck here underneath? And you're making it hard to breathe. So take a look around and tell me what you see. You'll find me underneath.
"I know what to say but don't know where to begin. The fear of losing you beneath my skin. Is there resolution for this pain that I'm in?
"Sitting all alone in this place, even though we're here face to face. There is nothing gone, but there's something wrong.
"Can't you see that I'm stuck here underneath? And you're making it hard to breathe. So take a look around and tell me what you see. You'll find me underneath.
"If only you could feel what I dream, maybe you could hear what I mean. There is nothing gone, but there's something missing.
"Can't you see that I'm stuck here underneath? And you're making it hard to breathe. So take a look around and tell me what you see. You'll find me underneath.
"'Cause I'm stuck here underneath. And you're making it hard to breathe. So take a look around and tell me what you see. You'll find me underneath."
When Zac's done, I just sit there with a big, gaping metaphorical hole in my chest, spilling what's left of my heart at my feet. I want to throw up. I want to cry. But most of all, I want Zac to put down his stupid guitar and hold me. But I can't move and he doesn't.
All is silent until Isaac speaks.
"Guys?" he asks. Zac slowly puts his guitar down in it's case. "Guys?" Isaac asks again.
"I can't do this," Zac whispers. He slowly gets up and leaves. Then we hear the patio door slide open and close. I turn to my older brother.
"Ike?" He sighs.
"It's okay, Taylor. I'll go talk to him." I nod and watch my brother go after Zac, leaving me to my own confusion.
