CHAPTER TWELVE: breaking up ISN'T hard to do

I grab Billy's phone, sit in his desk chair and dial David. He picks up after the first ring.

"Hey, Seb," he greets me.

"Caller ID?" I ask, speaking in English.

"Yeah." There's a pause.

"There's something I gotta tell you."
"There's something I gotta tell you." We say together, then we laugh.

"You first," I say.

"Seb, you know I love you," David starts.

"I love you too, David," I tell him.

"But I can't do this anymore," he says.

"Do what?" I ask, confused.

"I can't date you when we're so far apart," David answers.

"You're dumping me?" I'm completely surprised.

"I still love you," David says quietly.

"I love you too," I reply. "But it's okay, really."

"You don't need to pretend, Seb."

"I'm not pretending. I mean, this totally sucks, but I wanted to tell you the same thing."

"Really?" David sounds surprised.

"Yeah. I mean, I wish it didn't have to be this way, but...ya know." I shrug to myself.

"I know," David says quietly. There's a slight pause. "But I guess it's better that we both feel this way."

"Yeah," I agree. "Hurts a bit less."

"I'll always love you, Sebastien."

"I know. And I'll always love you. You're my first love."

"Same here."

Silence comes over the line.

"You'll still write me?" I ask. "We're still friends?"

"Of course," David answers. "We'll always be friends."

"So um, I guess I'll let you go. Tell the guys 'Hi' for me."

"I will. I love you, Seb."

"Love you too, David."

We hang up and there's a huge grin on my face.

"Everything go okay?" Billy asks. I nod.

"It went well. He broke up with me," I say. Billy raises his eyebrows.

"Really?" I nod again.

"I need to go see Benji. I'll see you guys tomorrow." They all wave as I head out the door.
